He was without a doubt the most interesting professor/teacher I have ever had. I had a latent love of history that came alive when I took his Ancient History class in the first quarter of my freshman year(1992). His deeply personal WWI class influenced the way I see all of history. He honestly changed my life.

By far worst professor ever taken at OU. Literally none of his lectures would come to clear coherent points. He would ramble on about his wife and views on the bible and when it came to the tests its as if it was in a different language. He treats everything as if it is your major but makes sure to tell you the opposite. Thank god he's done here.

Class brought WWI alive for me. Dr. Richter is extremely knowledgeable about the subject. He teaches using music of the era plus very graphic pictures. His tests were comprehensive but the material was always covered in class. I'd love to take another class with him.

Richter is a god of history. He tells the stories of the past with such vivid detail and passion you would think was there. And perhaps he was. If you have the time, check out his books they are well worth the read. This guy really embraces the past as a source of life.

Had him back in '96. Wow. Just filling a history requirement and fell in love with the class. I loved the fact he ended every lecture with a cliff-hanger. It made you want to come back to class to find out how it would all resolve. So much knowledge. So much energy. Such painfully skinny legs. Great guy.

He is a gem. He demands hard work but his enthusiasm makes it easy to do. He had a class of 70 kids in tears with the journal readings. He made the loss of innocence that war caused real to us. I have forgotten so much of what I learned at OU but Dr. Richter, my WWI classmates and those who served in WWI, I will never forget.

What can I say? Just reading these comments helps to rekindle my passion for the past. I wish more professors and teachers truly cared about history like Richter did. The WWI equipment he brought in established a very real connection to the period.

It says it all when a professor says, "I'd do this even if they didn't pay me! I love my job!" That kind of passion is rare and precious! I'll never forget spending a Winter quarter in the trenches with my classmates.

Great professor, but he's a little bit crazy. He obviously is Athiest and tries to convey his messages to you with pretty good factual points. He liks to also point out facts that extra-terrestrials had something to do with history. Cool guy though.

I took his class as a graduate student in the mid 1990s and he was one of the finest history professors I ever had. When he lectured on WWI, he made the past live and breath and very real. He had a sense for the period that seemed uncanny.Enjoyed the class very much. Thanks for the wonderful memories.

Too bad professor Richter was forced into retirement. He was a delight to have as a professor and an all around good person. He reminded me why I majored in history and brought home the suffering of people who lived and died nearly 100 years ago.

Probably the best prof I had as an undergrad. Stop whining about his being really enthusiastic, and how hard he is, and sit back and LEARN something, yeah? He knows so much, and you ought to take advantage of that. You're lucky to have the chance.

This is by far the WORST professor I have EVER had at Ohio University. This guy thinks that his class is the ONLY class that you are taking and requires projects that just take an obscene amount of time to complete and the final is just pure hell.
