This man is a genius. He knows what he's talking about, and his class was one of the best I've ever taken. He can come across as condescending, and he accidentally insults a lot, but he likes if you at least try to interested. I wish he was still at WSU!

I absolutely adore him, granted I got a D (but that was for personal reasons which we discussed) He's a brilliant person, and not to mention snarky, and very quick-witted. Don't screw around in his class, take ACCURATE notes, DO YOUR READING, and you'll be fine :) Don't let him scare you off the first day, he's way too good to miss!

I really love English; reading & writing have always been exciting & liberating, but Hayes somehow taints them; he turns learning into loathing. He'll make you read the most boring and pointless readings that no other Eng 111 class is reading, then he doesn't give you instructions on your papers because the descriptions are in the book. And the Canada stories are boring and annoying. Don't take him! He's AWFUL. If you can, get someone else.

A big arrogant prick--and really good at it. If you don't think like him, you have two choices: say what he wants or kiss his dirty butt. Advice: either way, buy some Listerine. He will intimidate and belittle you for his own enjoyment. It's actaully a better sociology course because you can observe students who get off on his abusive behavior.

Simply amazing. He makes you proud to be an English Major, and his high expectations make you want to succeed. I LOVE him! Quirky, funny, dirty--an altogether charmingly intelligent man. Pure genius! To gain his respect is something I will strive for throughout my entire college career. ^_^ Blame Canada!

Some people say that he is arrogant and impossible. The truth is, the man is a genius. If you want to succeed in life (post-college), take as many English classes with him as you can. He will be the first to call you on your mistakes, but it makes you that last to make them again. He is brilliant. You will be challenged, but it is well worth it!

Little do many know... Dr. Hayes used to play guitar in an 80s Prog Rock band. He used to live down the street from me and was still cool even when he walked by and I was drinking tequila on the porch. He's an awesome prof. but judging by this webpage his teaching hasn't made anyone better at spelling, grammer, or basic sentence structure :)

scares people away on the 1st day b/c he likes small classes,but is a really cool guy. unfortunatley hes a hard grader and doesnt curve, but if you work hard you can pull off a good grade. go to class to earn free points on in class writing assignments that can bump you up 10%.

He scared the crap out of us in the beginning, and I almost the first week. I am so glad I didn't. I learned a ton and I can already tell my writing has improved. Take him if you're willing to go to class and work hard... it'll be worth your time.
