Comment:

Love him as a person. I had him for ORGO 1, and he was just as useless then as he is now. He is concept heavy, has little to no organization in lecture, and tests are difficult and most is learned independently. However, if you get to know him, he is very flexible and does curve nicely at the end of the semester. He also is HILARIOUS

Dr. O'Connell is a wonderful person and seems like he actually cares. His exams are very tough, but simple if you go the extra mile. Reading is MANDATORY, and there are sapling questions that are given, but not graded. DO THEM. Do not depend on his lectures, and keep up with class no matter what. He also gives a lot of extra credit!

Comment:

O'Connell is the most interesting professor you will ever meet. He is very enthusiastic and passionate about organic chem, so you will always be entertained in class. However, the subject is not easy and his tests are VERY hard. His lectures and notes are not organized, so read the book before class and do his practice problems.

O'Connell is my favorite person and I loved his class. He's so entertaining and he really does care about you. Of course orgo is not easy, so no matter which professor you take, you're going to have to read the book, but I think O'Connell does a good job of explaining certain topics. Going to office hours and asking questions is an absolute must.

he is absolutely terrible. he only teaches about half of the material and says look up the rest in the textbook. Doesn't answer questions at all. tests are unbelievably ridiculous no matter how long you study. DO WHATEVER YOU CAN TO AVOID

Dr. O'Connell is the best teacher I've ever had. His tests are hard. He makes you to think outside the box. If you are a premed take him and there will be no need to study for the orgo section at all.

So unbelievably frustrating. I'm an A student and have never gotten anything but As in Chem, but he has made chem unbearable. He does not teach at all in class, he is completely disorganized, not helpful at all in any context, and his tests are impossible--it doesn't matter how much you study. Read the book, it's the only thing you'll learn from.

READ THE BOOK! That is all I can say. O'Connell is a very nice guy, but his test are very hard. If you just go to lecture and study those notes, you will FAIL! If you have to take him, read some of the material everyday and do practice problems everyday! You can do well in his class you just have to invest a lot of time. There is no easy orgo class

Avoid if you can! I worked my but off for this class and put in hours of studying to get a sub par grade. His exams are really hard. The final exam was given by the ACS, so he did not write those questions and they were 10x easier than his exams. Very unreasonable exams. Spent hours reading the book because he did not go over most of the material

He is quite possibly the worst teacher at Fairfield U. He doesn't entertain questions in class and tells you to consult the book, makes you feel stupid, and is extremely insensitive. I'm extremely hard working and I put a lot of effort into studying and am still failing. He's at least 70 and stuck in his ways for good.God Bless whoever takes him.

AWFUL TEACHER. USELESS IN EVERY SENSE OF THE COURSE. DID NOT HELP; DOES NOT HAVE OFFICE HOURS...IS ONLY CONCERNED ABOUT RUNNING MARATHONS. I was a chemistry major before this class and after this class i refuse to take another chemistry class. there is a 30 point curve on every test.. but dont let the fool you everyone fails. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!

I am a smart, hard working student and reading these reviews i went into his class thinking i could do well if i worked hard enough. BIG MISTAKE! he is wasting people's futures, money and time. truly unreasonable prof: he is putting 2-3 questions per exam that take HIM a whole day to work out on an hour exam and doesnt give extra time. Avoid!

Not the best prof to be teaching an intro course to chem. He hasnt used our book a lot. The tests are hard and you think you're prepared until you take it.. but he curves them so it works in the end. Not a good class to take if you dont already have a strong basic knowledge going into it

And yes it is possible to do DECENT in this class if you know EVERY single detail and exception in the textbook, good luck students thats as easy as getting in to med school with Cs and Ds.Even if that happens,ull have EJS tests, which you will look at like a diff. language
