Comment:

I had Ed as a teacher way back in the 1970s (!!) and he changed the course of my life. He was an inspirational, supportive, warm human being who gave us challenging and fascinating projects. More than a decade later I started teaching myself, and Oates remains to this day a great role model. I still recall things he said in the classroom. Grateful!

Eddie Herschel Oates is a major reason I'm still in love with what I do. He rounded the rough edges, made the impossible possible. He's an asset to RISD, and any student lucky enough to study with him.

Eddie is probably the nicest man you will meet in your entire life. After the initial project, he essentially gives you complete freedom over your projects. DO NOT PLAY IT SAFE! Push your boundaries -- Eddie will help you if you just ask. As long as you put your heart into your work and try new things Eddie will support you 100% of the way.

Ed Oates is wonderful, interesting, insightful, hilarious, and brilliant. Make sure to ask him about his personal life. I spent hours talking to him about the time he spent living in the wilderness alone or how he used to make his own bows and arrows to hunt game with. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't be active in half as many activities I am now.

If you apply yourself at all to this class, you'll do well. Just don't slack off much. He is incredibly nice, which isn't so good for feedback's sake, but it's nice to take a break from working and just talk to him. Also, he doesn't offer much technical instruction up front, but if you ask him about something he generally WILL help you with it.

Most open ended class assignments ever and very high expectations from you that he NEVER enforces. That is why this class is challenging. Must be self motivated to get something out of it but he is an amazing resource!!!
