Comment:
Ellen is probably the smartest person I have ever met in my life. She is also the most eccentric, and often pretentious and obtuse. Her class is extremely challenging, but don't be (too) intimated--nobody can possibly do all the reading. You have to learn to nod along and agree with her, and you can definitely learn a lot if you put the effort in.

Comment:
Professor Mease is perhaps the most brilliant person I have ever met. However, this is not all roses and butterflies. Her intelligence often gets in the way of clarity, she expects prior knowledge that no one has, her workload is rather intense, and her interpretation of things are very rigid. She's a wonderful person, but a very hard professor.

Appalling. Thinks dramatic literature and theatre are only about ideas. No interest in people. Very insecure and always has to prove she's the smartest one in the room. It's a dramatic literature class for people who read and don't have lives, not for people who think that theatre is a living thing.

Absolutely terrible. I couldn't understand a word she said in class, and when I was having personal problems, she was completely unwilling to make any sort of compromise at all. She may be brilliant, but I know I will never take another class with her.

Perhaps she works better at Grinnell, but as a guest instructor for the ACM Florence Program, not so much. Quite possibly the most difficult and worst professor I have ever encountered. Manages time badly, expects too much of the students, and seems incapable of realizing any point of view other than her own.

I have never taken a more demanding class nor have I met a crazier woman. However, no one knows as much as Ellen and while you understand only a very small portion of what she says you will still leave this class knowing more about dramatic lit then you ever thought possible. I read more in this class then the rest of my life combined.

Ellen is unbelievably brilliant--her fountain of knowledge is extraordinary, and trust me, it spews forth in every class! You will leave each class intellectually drained! Crazy amounts of reading and extremely tough exams, but she works just as hard as you do. You will get SO much out of her class if you work your butt off. It's worth it!

Excellent teacher, provided that you are willing to keep up with her. Class will seem useless if you are tired or unprepared. Yet, if you work hard, you will have the opportunity to study under one of the smartest and well-read human beings ever. She is also a great friend, even after many years!

Don't take this class. Great lit, but a classics prof should be teaching it, not a theater prof. she doesn't really know what she's talking about here. texts read in a vacuum, no historical BG discussed. incredibly picky when grading papers, don't expect an A unless you wrote something phenomenal

I was lucky enough to have Ellen for Tutorial -- she took us all under her wing & continued in her role as guardian angel for years. She's wild, beautiful, strange, and totally unforgettable.

Ellen is one of the most demanding Profs on campus. She often assigns several hundered pages of reading and expects a high level of analysis, however if you keep up with the work her analysis of text will help you understand the readings exponentially
