You need to make sure to read everything and understand it. She quizzes you everyday and calls you out in class! She makes you work hard and the tests require you to remember everything about what you read - including author's names and what they wrote. Always be prepared!

Haley is NOT easy, so if you're looking for a skate-by teacher, she isn't it. But - she was an incredible teacher. Extremely thorough. Be prepared to write (like, every day, a reflection on the reading) so if you don't read the work or are always five minutes late, don't bother. Tests were comprehensive - use quotes from text to win her over!

Dr. Haley is very strict on the attendance policy! I took this as an 8am class, and if you're not there by exactly 8, you might as well not show up. She actually is tells people to drop out of her class, and told at least one student in my class that "college isn't for him." I have always loved my English professors, but this one is an exception.

Didn't have many problems with her. She has her opinions but if you back up your own on testswritings you're fine. We read a wide range of stuff, and a lot of it, but it's a freaking English class, so I'm not sure what some people expected. Tests can be tricky but as long as you follow the study sheets and discussions they're simple enough.

Refused to give us a complete schedule and instead emailed a ton of assigned reading twice a week. Expected direct quotes on closed book essay tests. Instead of lecturing, we discussed what was read as if it were a book club focused on transcendentalists and feminism.

You have assigned readings every night and it is very important to read them, because she does quizzes in the beginning of each class. Also, make sure to take good notes on each reading, because you have to know everything from all the previous readings.

This was by far my favorite class this semester! The class was just a gen. ed. but I learned so much from Dr. Haley. She is passionate about what she teaches and is extremely knowledgeable. I have no idea why people are making horrible comments about her on here unless they just didn't try. She doesn't just give a grade away. Try. put an effort in.

As an English major, I hated having Dr. Haley for Dev. of the American Novel. Not only are discussions strictly her opinion, but if you seek help for your final paper, you will be let down for sure. I did well, surprisingly because we were expected to read a book a week simultaneous to other upper-division English courses I took. Take Bruce Degi!!!

At the strat of the semester I absolutely hated her. I was warned that she was a fire-breathing dragon and I agreed. But I ended up loving her! I disagreed with her plenty (on tests and in discussion) and I got an A. As long as you can back up what you're saying in the text book and pay attention, you'll be gerat. Loved her and will take her again.

It's definitely not an easy A. You need to be present and pay attention, but the information that you take away will be worth it. Haley knows what she's talking about and gives a lot of insight; you can tell she really cherishes literature. Tests are consistent - once you take the first one you will know exactly what to expect. Great class.

I really enjoyed Dr. Haley's class. It's challenging in a sense that you have to do the reading to get by because all of her discussions and tests are analytically based. I think most people didn't like her because she's pretty old school but I think that's why I like her. She actually challenges you to do the reading and participate.

I enjoyed Haley's class. Lots of reading, but it's English. Her tests weren't terribly difficult as long as you paid attention to the discussions in class and the handouts she emailed for each section. Definitely not an easy A but if you do the work you should do fine.

This was a painful semester with DR.Haley (which she insists on being called). You never know where you stand because she grades with check plus'/check minus' except on her unresonable tests. If your opinion doesn't support the textbook, don't bother sharing it. She will laugh in your face. I started this class with 40 people and ended with 15.

I would recomend Professor Haley to no one. I hated her class. I though the basis of literature was that it had different interpretations, but not with Haley. She would actually laugh at students if she didn't agree with their interpretations. For her class all you do is memorize her opinion. No one should take Elsie Haley!

I took this class a few semesters ago, but I would like to offer my review belatedly. It's true that Dr. Haley can be intimidating and she is certainly not easy. Her lecture style is extremely laid back and then her exams shock you with their intensity. Pay attention to all that is said and take good notes. But you will learn a lot. I loved her!

This professor made me change my major. Terrible. Worst professor I have had to date. Plays favorites, and does not accept other opinions. To her, english is cut and dry, right or wrong, which I think is completely incorrect. There can be many different takes on literature. She had exams for god sakes. Absolutely terrible.

This teacher made me change my major from english to another major because she was so rude and mean! She had us do free writing every class period! (free writing) she said it was not graded and we could write whatever we wanted to! but she then trashed my free writing and embarrassed me several times in class! I had to drop it.
