do.not.take. he's a horrible professor and doesn't care about the students at all. I didn't really learn anything in his class and was generally good at chemistry before this class. he made me hate chemistry.

Though the class can be frustrating sometimes due to the difficulty, I actually learned quite a lot. It really is more like "advanced" vs. "accelerated" chemistry, but some of the material was just fascinating. Problem sets are hard, but interesting. Dr. Toone is also really nice and always available if you go talk to him.

If you're looking for a brush up on general chemistry, don't take this class unless you want to work and love the subject. Dr. Toone is a great professor who loves what hes doing and loves to help kids out, but its a daunting class. It is "advanced chemistry" not "accelerated." That being said, go talk to Dr. Toone cuz he's the man

i would advise against taking chem 23. it's essentially general chem on crack, plus random hard topics he feels like covering (physical chemistry, orgo, etc). just jump straight into orgo, as you don't need more than a basic understanding of gen chem for it. if you REALLY feel shaky about gen chem and want to review, take chem 22.

he's really only teaching because he has to so he can research. that said, you get the review of everything you need before orgo, but it's not really general chem - the jumping around is actually kind of interesting. you don't have to read the book just learn his lectures verbatim, do the rec problems, and you're golden. he's also very approachable

Bad professor. The subject was interesting, but the class was not accelerated general chemistry. Jumped around to different topics and delved into unnecessary depth. He gives 4 recitation problems a week, it's difficult to find out what to learn. The ebook is useless and a rip off.

Some kids took the class w/ no AP credit; those kids r either brave or idiots. DON'T DO IT either way though - take 22 or Orgo. Read other comments, but Toone is approachable in office hours and will hook you up with the grade if you work at it.

Although Toone seemed very nice and quite knowledgeable, this class was NOT general chemistry. It started with physics, then covered orgo, p-chem, and stats in GREAT detail before ending with a bit of general chem. If you took AP Chem your junior year and want a review before orgo, take Chem 22. Be ready to spend hours studying if you want an A.

Not an easy class, but a good intro to Orgo it seems. 1/4 of every test is off the problem sets verbatim, but the rest seems requires some creativity and application of concepts and reading between the lessons, NOT just plugging and chugging with some equations. That said, it's obvious that he doesn't care about the class much, just another chore.

Class not stressful at all. Lots of idiots take this class since it's introductory so curve very generous. You can chill and still get at least an A-.

So much for Gen Chem. This is NOT GenChem. This is orgo + stats rolled into one course with a little bit of leukemia info sprinkled on top. TAKE ORGO! That's the class you'll be taking if you take this class anyway - the recommended reading for the first exam was the Orgo textbook anyway. And the avg on all the exams was ~60-65%. Argh...

Dr. Toone is a good lecturer but really did not make a lot of concepts clear. He was hard to reach outside of class, though TA's were quite useful. I learned a lot in Chem 23 but it was very hard.

Toone tries. I think he really tries. but he's just not a good professor for undergraduates. He's passionate about his actual research and is approachable during office hours. But he's obviously not at Duke for teaching...You must have a decent background in chem to take this class. GO TO LECTURE! his tests on only cover info from lecture and rec

DO NOT TAKE CHEM 23.The class requires the same AP credit as Orgo,so there is no point of the class.thoughtit would be revision of material I had done, instead the class is the same material, the recitations and tests are CRAZY. Toones a horrible teacher. He takes the class at 8:30 becaue he doesn't want it to get in the way of the rest of his day

Dr. Toone would much rather be teaching orgo, and it shows. That said, however, his lectures are pretty helpful and notes were straightforward, and tests were difficult but not ridiculous. Obviously expects students to know a lot of prior chemistry, because he tends to brush past certain topics and spend a great deal of time in others.

take this class if you are really interested in trying hard to understand a lot of concepts and learning to apply them to various problems... not too bad if you spend a lot of time on it.. but if you want to take a general chemistry class take 21 or 22.. toone is a good professor though

He doesn't teach Chemistry. He teaches "Toone-ology", a new school of PSEUDOscience! Most of what he teaches is straight-up wrong. He would make more damage than benefit to your knowledge of science. And you'll need years of math, physics, biology and real chemistry classes (not tought by toone) to correct the mistakes he randomly makes in your hea

expects you to know everything he plans on teaching before the class starts. uses a lot of orgo, afterall, he is an orgo professor. fulfills requirements, but you need to have a strong background and a lot of time dedicated to studying chem from day one. average on tests was 65%. good. freaking. luck.

This is a weeder class, so you're going to get a lot of comments from pissed off people. His lectures are informative. The problem sets follow from the lectures. Tests really distinguish people who get the material and people who simply memorize material. You'll find out if you are good at chemistry in this class. Some of the labs are a pain.
