Comment:

Erin? Interesting teacher. Not good, but she has Charisma when she walks in the classroom. At times she is engaging, but this is rarely used. Uniqueness in spades. Unlike most profs. Not so good. She teaches in a manner that cycles from fun to angry, and she has the Nerve to get you to do a lot of group work. Talent is clear from years of teaching.

This is the worst possible course you could take. I know... it sounds great. It sounds like you will learn a ton and make great connections. Chances are you will not, you will hate your time in the class, and will be demanded to meet criteria that are unclear. You will be offended and wonder why you are sitting here. Don't waste your money.

She manages to never quite tell you what she's looking for when grading, and then docks you points when you don't get her exact interpretations of things. Also does not grade or round properly, so if she doesn't like you, you'll get lower grades than you earned. Even when points add up in your favor. And it's not by mistake.

This was my favorite class this semester. She give you all the information needed, and its up to you to do the work or not. Just come to class everyday and you will pass. Trust me. Its all in your hands rather you pass or not. My peers just wanted an easy hand out, life does not work like that. She is a easy grader and doesnt care if you are late!

she was nice and wanted to cover a lot of material, so she was very unorganized. we had too many guest speakers and not enough learning about the history. if you are late or don't show effort, she will not like you. i got a B and did all she asked of us.

This was the only history class at Columbia I didn't drop after the first day. She makes it interesting. There's lots of work and reading, but you can get by without doing ALL of it. Super sweet lady, never got bored.

Honors Oral History. This class takes a hell of a lot of time outside of the classroom. If you are not willing to do that, then don't bother. BUT if you are- this calss extremely rewarding. You are doing something that actually makes a difference led by a teacher who really cares about what she is doing. Very understanding and thoughtful.

I loved this class. I'm a film major so I took it to aid in interviewing skills for doc films. I was so excited to go to class each week. Erin is a great professor and if you need help she is there for you. She is understanding when it comes to the interviews which are difficult to get and transcribe. If you talk to her she will help you.

Had her for Oral History last semester and I thought she was pretty fantastic. She's a passionate person and I like to see that in a teacher. She also knows her stuff. She's a real (educated) historian and it shows. The class is a lot of work, but it's totally worth it. Trust me, you'll feel really accomplished after you finish the final project.

I really enjoyed Dr. McCarthy's Oral History class, which is surprising because I was not interested in the subject AT ALL when I enrolled in the class. The class was difficult and I spent many, many hours reading, writing, oh... and transcribing a 2 1/2 hour interview, but it was well worth it! She knows her stuff!

I strongly advise against this class, especially if you're a senior. This is a gen-ed course but you wouldn't know it by the two 400-500 pg. novels that you need to complete. You'll also do a book report on a different book and an oral presentation. She is strict, obnoxious, and disrespectful to all.

i can't even begin to explain how much i dislike this woman. she is the most unsympathetic human i think i've ever met. if you choose to take her class, be prepared for a TON of work, a very strict attendance policy, and listening to her crazy ramblings for 3 hours in a row. HORRIBLE. i hope she reads this, shes in for a wakeup call.

She is really into the subject and a couple of the field trips were interesting, but that is about the extent of the plusses. She talked down to students/really had no respect for them, she was not open to new ideas -do not think outside of the box. For a good grade, just repeat what she has said during in-class discussions and state the obvious.
