Comment:

Taking Smith's class is a huge mistake. She is extremely rude, opitionated and degrading to her students. Reading is essential to passing and there aren't many test. The overall teaching style Smith has can be characterized as vague. She basically talks in circles. If you want to feel unimportant, degraded and stupid take Smith's class.

Personally, I enjoy Professor Smith as a teacher. She is extremely educated and although her class doesn't always focus on literature to be specific it does teach you more than just whats in the books. She is very blunt in her opinions so sometimes it's just easier to agree. Overall, I enjoyed listening to what she had to say. Very entertaining.

If you show up to class and participate you will do great but, there was really no clarity or direction. Her lectures frequently strayed to her expressing her opinions about whatever she happened to be thinking about. She has a lot of valuable things to teach, but that doesn't always happen. She can be pretty rude at times.

I'm in her class right now, and she is by far the worst professor I have ever had. She reminds me of teachers that I would expect to see in my high school. She isn't clear on any of her instructions, she is very unorganized it's the course content, and she only values Her own opinions. She is biased

If you can't handle someone telling you that you're wrong, DO NOT take Professor Smith. She is very opinionated and if you don't agree with her then she assumes you're wrong. Also she admits that if she doesn't like you, you will not get very good grades. However, her grading is lenient and she gives opportunities for extra credit.

She might be the worst teacher I've ever had at WVU. She only cares about her opinions and anyone who disagrees with her is an idiot. She stereotypes all her students as idiots. She thinks too much of herself. The class isn't hard it will just take ever ounce of your being to not freak out at her for her ignorance and rudeness

Cares about no opinions but her own. Spends half of the class talking about how great Obama is and how people who dislike him are unintelligent and basically out of their minds instead of going over course content! Makes harsh, biased and stereotypical comments toward white americans. Test are easy& you must read to get points in class discussions.

I found her class to be one of the most interesting and educational classes at WVU. More teachers should teach like her. She's not a hard teacher, she just expects the best from students. She makes you think & actually use your brain & she lectures about issues and topics that need to be discussed in the classroom. I loved the class!

The experience I had in Smith's class was not good at all. After the first few weeks of class it was clear that she was not interested in the true opinion of her students, but their ability to guess what her opinion was. I eventually stopped going to class because every time I gave my true opinion, I was unfairly attacked by Smith. rude and crude.

My experience with Smith was less than pleasant to put it mildly. I am absolutely amazed at the good reviews I've read here. I did not learn a single thing in the class I took except for her political agenda. Even the fact that the quizzes and tests were easy would never be enough for me to EVER reccommend taking a class "taught" by this woman.

I found her to frequently be rude, bitter, wildly biased, and an overall poor teacher. I DO NOT suggest that anyone take this class if they are interested in learning. She requires a lot of reading which is actually quite good, and then accepts only her own interpretations and thoughts on the novels. She has only discouraged me in my education.

I cannot beleive the high marks this professor has recieved. This is the absolute worst class experience I have had at WVU. Her exams and quizzes are very easy, but you will learn absolutely nothing. She talks circles around her own jargon and accomplishes nothing in the process. She is incredibly offensive and insenstive to her students.

It may just have been the particular class I was in, because everyone else seems to like her on this site. But I found her difficult to work with, and the class tense and overmanaged. You can't conduct a discussion course by going around in a circle and never letting anyone talk out of turn, with everyone reading from preprepared notes.

English at WVU is not complete without the Ethel Smith Experience(tm). She's one of the best professors I've ever had, and a close friend as well. Her classes are very well-taught and she loves and supports her students in all of their endeavors.

This class is DEMANDING, but she is an excellent teacher. The readings & in class discussions get intense & you'll talk about some very controversial topics, but you'll always leave her class with something. Very open & will give u all the help she can. Tests & quizzes are fair & are returned fast.
