Rick is so smart and he has high standards for his students, so if you're not interested in using your brain and being challenged intellectually, then his class is not for you. But beyond being super smart and actively engaged in his work and the subject, he is so helpful, supportive, and very very very eager to talk with students about writing.

I had Mr. Reiken 2 years ago for a literature class and a workshop. His mentorship during that time has been a lasting influence. He provided a great atmosphere in which to grow as writers, and in the process I also learned to think about literature from a writer's perspective, which was new and different at first but quickly seemed essential.

i appreciated what reiken had to offer. he is definitely one of the best at emerson and is definitely super smart. this can occasionally be intimidating but mostly it forces you think about things in a way you never did before. that's what i appreciated most. he's also v. willing to take time out and speak to you in his office hours

This professor is so smart he should be cloned and distributed to colleges across the country. Seriously, Prof. Reichen knows what he is talking about. Don't be fooled by his easygoing nature, he is very serious about his subject. He was helpful and inspiring and what I learned in this class continues to influence my writing now.

Aside from the occasional really bad pun, he is an excellent teacher. His comments were seriously helpful and he has a sixth sense for detecting b.s., though he's nice about it. If you are serious about your writing, he is someone who will help you see what you need to see about your own work.

He is probably the best professor I've had at Emerson. He cares about his students and wants us to actually learn something. I'm amazed to see a few of the comments here because Rick is a genuinely caring person, always willing to listen. I have to assume these people got bad grades.

I think Reiken is the kind of teacher that either does it for you or doesn't. In my case, I loved his dry sense of humor, his patience, and his general advice on ficiton writing. He can find something good in even the worst story. I found all his critiques very insightful.

I can honestly say that he is a knowledgeable writer who has real help to give beginning writers. I finished my MFA last year, and advice he gave me still helps me, particularly in novel writing. What some would call standoffish probably has more to do with shyness. I thought he was a doll.

rick knows formulas for writing fiction & that's what he teaches. Lesson to be learned-writing and science are two different subjects pal.

Tough but very knowledgeable and articulate. Liked to discuss things on an Author-Narrator-Character axis that really helped to understand and analyze. Sometimes came across as cold and distant, but overall definitely a class worth taking.

Very good for explaining/applying fiction elements, but unhelpful with specific criticism. Classmates helpful, though. Good discussions. Interesting and intelligent, but I gather that he's more moody this year, and very blatantly praises/criticizes.
