Foard-sensei is really nice. I don't think this class is very helpful, but it's an easy upper division elective -- and it's pretty fun to apply Japanese to stuff you've definitely watched before, ala Ghibli movies. I just wish the class was better structured in terms of tests: it's impossible to determine what's going to be on one. Just hope.

I love Foard-sensei (for lower division) despite her disorganization, but I don't recommend this class (Pop Culture) if your main goal is sincerely improving your Japanese. It's mostly Shadowing and an extension of the pointless part-of-speech tagging from JPN301.

Professor Foard is a great professor. She really wants all of her students to learn. Be prepared to put in some serious work. There are small quizzes everyday and a few chapter tests. She is very understanding and offers plenty of additional resources and tutors to ensure your success. Overall great experience in with this professor!

She is helpful and knowledgeable about her subject. I took Language of Japanese Popular Culture II with her and the class set-up was confusing overall. You need to learn the way she grades tests a little so that you adapt to her preferences. She is willing to help, however, but make sure you are specific.

Mrs. Foard is very unorganized and even though this is an introductory class she expects you to know alot of the basics of Japanese grammar coming into it. We were assigned at least 30 pages of homework a week in our workbook several students who were really into Japanese had to drop it because they were so overwhelmed.

This is a 5 credit class, very intense, homework and quizzes are expected every day of her class. Unfortunately, she is very unorganized, doesn't follow the schedule (So you might get a quiz you didn't even know about) and a very unfair grader. The amount of work expected worth few points. I would rethink and take this class at a Community College.

Take Wilson instead if you're just doing 101 for fun, but otherwise she's the better option. The class is work-intensive and she is a strict grader, but she is a great lecturer, has a wonderful sense of humor, and is more devoted to her students than any other professor I've met. You must be highly motivated to succeed but will love her if you are.

Funny lady and helps your listening skills in class. Study as often as you can; the grammar and kanji pile up. She can be somewhat disorganized at times, but in my experience it's most often the students being the disorganized ones. Take responsibility if you're serious about Japanese. It's not hard if you care about doing a good job.

Foard-sensei is a native speaker, and if you want to learn Japanese take her. She hands out a detailed schedule which you NEED to survive. She's not very understanding when it comes to meeting outside of class, and quizzes were rushed at the end of class and sometimes multiple quizzes on one day. But overall the class was fun and manageable.

Disorganized and runs behind her own schedule. She will do make up quizzes on top of other quizzes. This class had me take 4 quizzes in one week. This is a 3 credit class. Do not take this class if you are at or below 202 level, it is too hard.

Will teach an entire course wholly in Japanese and never once clarify anything said. She won't explain why something works or other ways to use it - the end result is the obligatory three hours of homework to understand what she should have just taught in class. Do not take her course.

Foard-sensei is very nice and helpful, and very easy to get along with, but can be very unorganized depending on the semester (she has a lot of research and other things going on). She is lenient on due dates, but not on grading, and she never curves. Nobody in my class managed to get an A. Make sure you know all the details before an exam.

I went on study abroad with her last summer and discovered that she is incredibly disorganized. Her teaching methods are stuck 30 yrs in the past, and as dept head she expects the rest of her staff to do the same. She is rude to her students and staff. Don't do her study abroad, and take 101/102 at community college instead.

We got behind schedule real fast. By the end of the semester she would rush all the material once, which was overwhelming for most students. Overall, Foard Sensei needs to work on her organizations skills. I wouldn't recommend this class, if you have a lot of workload from your other classes.

She is a cute little Japanese lady. Her JPN101 AND 102 class is always very funny and relax even almost have quiz in every class. She is my favorite Japanese professor.

Ridiculous amount of work. If you have other classes, you will either fail them or fail Japanese unless you have absolutely no life. She's very unclear and flies through everything. Quizzes everyday, all the time, sometimes multiple. Very unorganized. Do not take

Foard-sensei is very unorganized, inconsiderate of people's schedules outside of class. Her explanations are fuzzy at best. She'll tell you to do something at a certain without even asking if it would be okay. She assumes that everyone has nothing else to do and caters to the students who already know Japanese and don't need help.

She's such a cute little old Japanese lady that everyone in the class loved her and no one was ever upset. She's the kind of nice professor that won't get angry at you but you feel bad if you ever disappoint her. Her deadlines are pretty soft, and she's almost always willing to work with you if you forgot an assignment.

I have had this teacher a few times now, but I'm rating her on her performance as "overseer" of a TA on the study-abroad trip she runs. She frequently came to class to make derisive comments to our poor TA, made up silly dorm rules and secret rules, & enforced with vigor. If you want to study abroad, I highly recommend NOT going with her.

It wasn't until I looked back over the semester that I realized I had learned way more than I have ever learned in just one semester of any language. She is a VERY good teacher and if you work hard at this class you will have an easy time passing. Walk into this class expecting to work. Japanese doesn't come easy. GREAT TEACHER.
