Comment:

He will really push you to do something creative, but at the same time he is pretty subjective and his preference is hard to get. For the space project you'd better follow his instruction, while in the time project just don't waste time talking to him too much.

Comment:

Gareth's teaching style is counter-intuitive which makes him difficult for a foundation course. It's much more about self-forged process than product. If you prefer following directions or concrete teaching, Gareth is not for you. If you are easily offended, Gareth is also not for you. But he's hilarious, a sweet man, and changed my life.

I got lucky with an A in the class, managed to create a piece that 'surprised' himHe has extremely polarizing views and thinks he has figured the mysteries of the worldSays he knows what the 4th dimension is (he's crazy!)He doesn't really teach either. He may seem irrationally savage, but hes actually pretty constructive. & if you dont figure out what hes trying to teach you while youre in his class, you will afterwards, and you will be very grateful. you'll learn a lot about how to approach&execute a project but nothing about 3D. Hes not good at seeing from other people's perspectives though.

He is an AMAZING! If you WORK HARD, you WILL be successful in the class. He changed the way I made and view art. What you learn in this class can be taken to your major. I wish I can take his class again.

Comment:

Gareth is a great teacher. I really loved and did very well on the space project. But the time project was very ambiguous and Gareth wasn't really helpful when I had trouble during the time project. This class is very tough and it definitely makes you think, but I don't think I actually learnt that much from the class.

I was incredibly lucky to have Gareth as a teacher. He forced me to deeply question myself and my thoughts, through which I was so enriched. I constantly confronted myself and my work in the deepest ways because of his questions and encouragement, and whenever I wanted to talk he would buy me coffee. Fantastic teacher, ultimately kind and genuine.

Although he knows what he's doing and he's keen about the the students' work, Gareth is extremely discouraging. Very mean and only wears black. Throughout the term, you are only assigned two final projects- I guess I learned a lot from the space project but personally the time project was pretty useless.

Anyone who hates Gareth and writes a bad review just had a bad critique from him. One of the most resourceful and amazing teachers I have had. I never had an interest or thought I would do good in his class but if you put a strong effort in and produce good work you're fine.

I think that Gareth is the worst teacher I have ever had. I work 3D but he decided who I was at the beginning of the semester and just attacked me the whole semester for it. Feel like I learned nothing from him.

His projects are very conceptual, sometimes way too vague. The space project and Artist project has cetain standards that you need to follow in order to be successful. However, in the Time project there is no such standard for what is good or not. If he likes you, then you will get good comments. Try to talk to him, suck up and you will survive.

Comment:

Gareth loves hard workers. If you work hard then you are at least in a safe zone. But some exceptions exists: you must speak English well. In other words you need to have some presentation skills. Lots of students can get away by presenting their work well even if the actual work is not that impressive.

When I read these ratings I got so scared, but when I actually took the class I really enjoyed when Gareth talked about his multiple dimensions and positive space. Gave me a new perspective on things. And he cares a lot of about his students. Pretty cool, glad I had him!

Gareth is SO rad! Engage him in conversation as much as possible, he usually will wait for you to approach him instead of seeking you out to talk to you. He's super conceptual, you won't be getting any "traditional" teaching methods.changed the way I think about my work. Seek out YOURSELF in his projects, not what has been successful in the past

The "space" project sucks and the effort/time/volume of work that you do doesn't reflect in what he thinks. However, the "time" project is a little more open ended...if you dive into that, he will appreciate it. He also likes sketches that you show that are crammed with notes and diagrams (you can write meaningless stuff if you want).

Comment:

Gareth rewards extremely hard work and an interest in synthesizing science, math, and art. He'd rather see something incredibly ambitious and unusual than the same old. Personally, I loved Gareth - you just can't take anything personally and constantly push yourself beyond the obvious answer. Prepare to lose your free time, weekends, and holidays.
