Do not ever get on Gary's bad side. Be respectful (don't text or talk during rehearsal and DEFINITELY don't miss it), practice your music, and be prepared for rehearsals and performances. Gary isn't the most likable person for some and his demeanor can come off crass, but he genuinely cares about his students and performers.

Everyone says Gary is a nut - he absolutely is, but he's fantastic! I learned to the best of my capabilities what he had to teach, and had fun doing it. He's tough, but understanding, and he gets the job done well, but we could've used more prep/study time. Overall great teacher, study and do the homework and you'll be fine.

Dr. Gilroy has good and bad. He has hi expectations, a lot of enthusiasm, great knowledge of some areas, and energy. He however is a "marching band" director and therefore not the most adequate symphonic band director, his choices of literature lack subtlety and class, and his teaching style is mechanical rather than musical. Not for everyone...

Gary is obsessive compulsive. We spent 1/2 hour drawing treble clefs. But he wants us to "LEARN TO EARN". Wound tightly, but fun!

I have known Gary for a number of years and I actually really like him as a person. As the director for the marching band, he is good for the job. However I do not enjoy playing the music he composes. To be honest, he has no clue what he is doing. It doesnt make sense and brings my day down a whole lot.

GPG knows how to get the job done. While it's not the easiest to deal with him sometimes, as a future band director, I've learned A LOT! Plus, I love playing loud and the shows the black man writes. I must, I'm in my 5th year of band!

I used to not like Gary because I thought his intentions were in the wrong areas. But since I have grown older, i have come to realize that he genuinely does great concern for his students and their development. he is a good man and anyone who disagrees is probably a loser who couldn't pass his courses.

Gary is very easy to get along with. He may yell at you on the field, but you can easily talk to him afterward and there won't be any problems. He may push hard sometimes, but when you march at the football games and hear the crowd, it's really all worth it.

Gary may be a nutcase who wants to throw himself off the tower sometimes, but he's great. He wants quality and demands that his band meets that standard. Because of that, the Fresno State band is one of the finest marching bands in the country.

He definately demands quite a bit in Marching Band, but does an amazing job considering what little time he has to work with. The difficulty is between a serious field-show competing HS marching band and a Drum Corps. It's a lot of work that you should take seriously, but still have fun at it.

Gary is by far the worst instructor in Fresno State's music program. You will need to put up with his juvenile, unprofessional behavior if you want a letter of recommendation, which is why so many self-respecting, talented players leave the major.
