He is a great professor. Though there is relatively a lot of readings, lectures are amazing. Often (with a few exceptions) the readings are short and no more than 5 pages. He is extremely knowledgeable and will question you but in a more respectful way. He does have a good sense of humor. Be sure to read and take notes. He loves discussion as well.

Very hard grader. You can attend class every day and participate in discussions and still not get an A in participation. There are only 4 things that go in the grade book and each portion is graded very hard and critically. On the other hand, he is a nice person and encourages your opinion.

One of the best lecturers ever. Very interesting and keeps students engaged. Lots of reading and it has a lot to do with science so I wouldn't recommend taking it as a freshman or not interested in science. Hard grader. One of my favorite professors

VERY TOUGH grader. First-time freshmen or students just looking to take class as GE, should take during summer or with different teacher because Randels is an Honors teacher. DO ALL THE READINGS; they are essential for class discussions and exams. Would not take another class from this teacher.

Over-prepare. Mr. Randels is a good teacher because he invokes discussions in class and always looks for someone to voice their opinion. There are many readings to be done before each class and it is important to read, otherwise you're going to be lost in class. Take notes on everything he presents and use them to study for the tests. Work hard!

Biomedical Ethics was a hard class. He is a tough grader on papers. I got a B- on my first paper but an A- on my second paper. He's a fair professor but won't give you a prompt to get there. Midterm was difficult. I suggest starting on your study guide ahead of time. Participation in class will help you. Going to take the final this week.

Randels is the kind of person you could discuss current events, ethics, and politics with over coffee, argue every point, and then leave as friends, only smarter. You'll be standing in the shower, and then realize you totally have another point. For 4 months. Less a class and more real life. I like it.

Comment:
This is a required ethics course to graduate & instructors are required to use an overpriced book. Despite the very tedious authors, he managed to make every class interesting and take a neutral & thoughtful position since your thoughts matter more to him than hearing himself lecture. To that end, respectful participation is required to do well.

Presentations were very clear. He is serious, which may be why people think he is arrogant. He is very open-minded and fair. He plays devil's advocate to all arguments. I learned a lot.

I hated this class. It was extremely boring, and the reading was even worse, not too mention incredibly long. He was a decent grader though. Very arrogant.

I was so excited to take this class! I thought it was RELIGION and cinema but he taught Christianity and cinema. And it seemed like we got marked down if we didn't act like devout Christians. I was surprised someone like this teaches at a school like UOP. Very closed minded and arrogant.

He is such a jerk! Has no sympathy to life's ups and downs, and on top of that, the lectures are boring, and he is a rediculously hard grader. What a horrible G.E. experience and class!

He had a reputation for being arrogant when I first started the course. Although I do see this characteristic,I think he has a genuine side to him. He graded an essay style exam too harshly (picking on every simple mistake),but he does seem to give decent feedback. Don't think I'll take him again.
