Comment:
He was unclear in assigning projects, required us to complete off the wall projects before starting our actual assignments, and graded with no basis for fairness or a sense of reality. The critiques were unhelpful and often more slanderous than useful information. Rigorous grader with in class participation.

Whether you like George or not really depends on whether you are able to see eye-to-eye about art with him. He is very critical about composition, but that pushes you to create some great artwork. He is very monotone and boring in his critiques but if you go to him for help and take his ideas into consideration, you will do well in the class.

Comment:
Unenthusiastic, boring and offers no basic structure for critiques. Inconsistent grading system in terms of individual projects and nearly killed my desire for Art as a career. A terrible reflection of the Art Department at Allegheny. If you genuinely care about your career as an artist stay far far away from this man.

Very helpful, but you have to ask. Really enjoys talking about art and seems more interested in composition and cohesiveness than meaning. Has a bizarre sense of humor, but very funny! Keeps track of your participation daily, checks attendance. I would recommend, but if you are struggling, make sure you ask for help. :)

Absolutely the dullest professor and person I have met. Speaks in a monotone and un-enthusiastic voice, gives the maximum ammount of work, has NO leniency, and is not clear at all. Even as an advisor he does the minimum of work for his advisees and students but assigns as much as possible. He grades unfairly and is extremely uninteresting.

horrible teacher, horrible grader. george has no idea about art. the only way to get a good grade in his class is to be a total brown noser. never never never take junior seminar from this man unless you don't really make art and you are totally uncreative. possibly one of the worst teachers at allegheny.

George knows art. He will help you understand what it takes to make good work if you're willing to listen. He is a hard grader and sometimes doesn't let you know your grade standings during the semester but I am still grateful for taking his classes and he is one of the most down-to-earth and well-spoken people I've met.

This guy taught art at UVA & CMU among others, so there is certainly something to be said for his teaching cred. He totally knows his****, is very perceptive, honest, & really is interested in helping you learn. If you understand art at all, his grades will make sense. He does drone like Ben Stein, but listen! He has wild stories & a lot to offer.

I thought I could take a college art class and enjoy the new experience. WOW was I f-ing wrong. Roland must be the biggest prick to walk the face of the earth. Once again another Allegheny teacher that pulls grades out of his a$$. He is one of 3 professors I recommend to avoid at all costs. Hear his name and run, run far far away from it.

This guy sounds like Bill Lumberg from Office space but with more of an attitude. I just hated the man and I think he got his degree from a cracker jack box.

His voice recalls Ben Stein, so it is hard to channel energy in his class. But can be very helpful. His comments are very valuable--he is chair of the department, after all, for his ability to quickly see problems and solutions (as well as strengths!) in student art. Unusually wide hips.

Definately weird grading, increments of 5 and 10, a nice fellow though. He does have a peculiar laugh, but his voice makes the class drag on................ A great person to talk to, and interested in his students. Tell me he doesn't look like an older Hugh Grant. (face)
