Comment:
Graeme is the most intelligent person I've ever had the pleasure of learning from -- I don't understand the negative reviews, unless you're hoping his classes will be easy, which they aren't. He has high standards for his students (you have to actually read & listen in class!), but if you're willing to put in the work, it's so worth it.

I love the subject but I hated everything about this class. I got the vibe that he does not care about his students AT ALL. He seems quite narcissistic and spends the entire class just talking. He gets angry if you even look down during his lectures, that are extremely boring and confusing. Save yourself some suffering and skip it.

Graeme is one of the best professors I've ever had. This is the kind of person who, after speaking with him or listening to him speak, you just feel smarter. He also is a very kind and respectful person. He can be very funny and has a really dry sense of humor. He appreciates participation and expects a lot inside and outside of class.

Very interesting lecturer. He made the texts and stories and come to life (which were otherwise not interesting, personally). Great Professor, demands attention and respect. He had a set up of Graduate Students who worked closely with students on papers and feedback. Wonderful professor! I took his class in fall semester of 2011 (late rating).

Lectures and reading materials were very interesting but the grade was based solely off of 3 papers which were very severely graded with little to no -constructive- feedback.

His lectures are very vague and repetitive, though it's imperative that you attend (some exam questions are based off of lectures). Meet with him...prepare questions/examples beforehand. He's insightful and patient, if off-putting. Spend serious time considering essay topics: it shows when you haven't thought through your thesis thoroughly.

The readings were difficult but enriching and interesting, no one ever said this should be an easy class. Graeme is a great professor who knows what he is talking about. He may be pretentious, but in a good way.

I found that the majority of the texts we read in class were very boring and sometimes hard to read. Most of them didn't have a plot to the story, which is something most of us are us to reading. Essays are graded hard, but you get a rewrite for the first one. Also he's bluffing when he says that the tests are hard - it's the essays that are

There are SO many readings over the semester. The entire grade is only 4 things, 2 essays, 2 tests. I find him to be very narcissistic. I would not recommend taking this class. Our texts include The Epic of Gilgamesh and Dante's Inferno, and Antigone. TA's grade papers, and are extremely strict.

Do not take any classes from this professor as you grade will surely suffer. His lectures and assignments are incomprehensible. He OFTEN goes off on tangents because he seems to like to hear himself talk. Save yourself the trouble.

I don't understand what is up with all the low ratings, Graeme* is quite possibly my favorite professor this semester. He seems to really know what he is talking about. The only reason I end up bored in his class is because of the subject matter, not Graeme* himself. In fact, he is the only reason the class is at all interesting.

Very confusing and extremely difficult to follow. Continually will go off on tangents about nothing of any importance and comes off as very conceited. Also, his TA's are the ones who grade papers, not him. Extremely difficult to try and meet with him in his office hours. Overall, a very stuffy and sometimes rude professor, I do not recommend.

My favorite professor so far. He's a genius, I feel as if sometimes his thoughts are too fast to catch up with his talking, so he wanders of often, which makes him hilarious. Lectures, movies and readings are very interesting. I would definitely recommend him, if you're ready to work very hard. Essays are very hard, exams are okay. Best class.

He was sort of entertaining to watch and listen to, but the class was just insanely boring. If you asked a question he would give a really vague answer, for instance about the 'media journals'. He says attendance is mandatory but there's like 200 people in the class and he's never taken attendance. Overall, avoid.

This class should not be an introductory level class. At the beginning of the class he stated this class would make me excited to read and learn about literature. NOT! More than ever before do I have a dislike for literature. The test questions are based on trivial information and the essays have little direction in which to work.

This class is way too hard for a freshman level course. He yells at people who talk in class. His lectures drag on and on and he has clear favorites. I do NOT recommend this professor. His office hours are always full and it is very difficult to get help from him or the TA's. Not a fan!

The grading consists of 2 essays and 2 tests. He grades very hard on the essays, so be sure to check with him/his TA's about your topic and such to avoid having a too broad topic. Also he grades on grammer so be careful on that! He's very nice and extremely helpful though.

Far too hard for an introductory class. You don't get a single point in the class until after the withdrawl date. Fine teacher, but way too much information gets covered. Overall a very poorly structured class.

Very intelligent. Taught as a very intense upper division class. Papers are 5+ pg. in-depth critical analysis. Is helpful to have a scientific background. Classes are discussion based so be prepared to participate. He is very willing to help students and effort is rewarded. Go to office hours and email him any questions.
