Hogdes is a very fast grader!! He had 10 page papers back to us after 2 days with lots of helpful comments. He leads discussion in class, but there is plenty of time to speak up. He knows what he is talking about, and has a nice voice to listen to. There are a lot of lengthy writing assignments. He expects you to read a lot.

He loves to see insight when it comes to the assigned readings. Paper assignments get rather repetitive, but speak up in class, draw some unique conclusions, engage in conversation about your research paper and make a good argument and you'll do well. Not the clearest professor, but it's definitely possible to get a good grade.

Don't even bother wasting your time. He is over teaching and it shows. He asks you for a 25pg paper in a 200-level history course - who does that? There is 100+ pages of reading a night, none of which is even remotely relevant to the class, and he just says stuff just to say it. He likes to show you his own books. Avoid him and his class.

Pretty good prof. Lectures the entire class, I found him to be very monotone and got tired in class often. Had one 10 pg paper due on the last day of classes, along with a midterm/final. Pretty easy grader, likes some participation

Pretty random discussions weren't terribly helpful, but he made nice use of the Internet to find examples of stuff the readings talked about. He's big on the process of writing history, and he's happy to look at more than one draft and suggest sources, so do consult with him throughout the term-paper process!

i hated this class. it was a waste of time to do all of his reading because all he did was tell us his own opinions and little historical anecdotes that weren't too related to modernity. even though this was a required class, it shouldn't have been this painful. also, he clearly doesn't read papers and bases grades on participation.

Found the class to be pretty boring, but really easy. The work load was minimal. Would recommend this class when looking to fulfill a required class while taking other hard classes.

3 essays, no tests, lots of reading but you can get by just listening in class, he hates when people don't participate, and he may seem intimidating at first but he's really not. when it comes to core classes i would strongly recommend hodges

Nice, Easy, gets off topic A LOT. Likes participation, easy grader on papers, gets off topic, doesnt teach the material very well unless you count his own opinions as the material. You don't learn anything, but he's an easy A and a nice guy!!

Professor Hodges is great. Extremely knowledgeble in his field (because of him, I actually became interested in 19th-century US history), and really helpful with papers. Teaches the whys of history, instead of just the whats. You'll work but love it. Highly recommended after two classes with him.

Initially I found him to be really pompous, but once you adjust he's a really nice guy, though, and he offers some interesting points about the material. Class is discussion-based, so it's all about class participation, but it's easy if you can manage to stay awake. He's heinously easy on papers.

This is the worst class I have ever taken in my life. It is a waste of time, and professor hodges is the most boring, monotone, terrible teacher I have ever had. There are huge loads of reading that end up being irrelevent because he just reiterates everything you read when you get to class.

This class was the biggest waste of time of my life. He didn't follow the syllabus at all and the class was completely unorganized. It was geared toward a very specific audience and he definitely played favorites in the class.
