Comment:
Dr. Simco's class was one of the hardest classes I have taken. However, if asked - he provides amazingly detailed feedback. The secret is to communicate, listen, and actually read his feedback. He is a true no-nonsense professor - and for some, that makes him too tough. I greatly enjoyed him as a professor and would do it again.

Assignments are unclear and he is a tough grader. He does provide good feedback, but if the assignments were more clear, the feedback would be more useful. The course provides little content from the professor, no guided lectures etc. Most likely will not take a class of his again.

You will learn more about technical academic writing from Dr. Simco than most professors in the program. He gives honest and fair feedback, and will actually read your paper in detail. He also expects your core idea to be doctoral and research worthy--for a doctoral program, this is a good thing! He is a fair and quick grader. Recommended!

Simco gets ripped a lot but I dig the guy and his class. A lot of reading, and his grading isn't easy (gee, who'd have thought that a grad CS class would be difficult, right?) Truth be told, I'm glad here to weed out the lazy bunch. He is enthusiastic and a very nice guy in person. No complaints here.

Assignments are very vague. However he is there to help you when you need it. The class is not very difficult but you will need to put in the effort for that A.

These reviews almost scared me away from this class. It is is definitely not an easy course, but it's manageable. His feedback can seem harsh at times, but just make the desired corrections and you can make it out of the class with an A. I would take another class with him!

Dr. Simco is not an easy prof. Swallow your ego after the first grade, and you'll find that he's very tough, but fair. Expect to work hard for that A. You will learn a lot. Ask intelligent, specific, questions and you'll get helpful, detailed answers. The trick is not to go in expecting him to teach you the basics. This is grad school after all..

This guy uses the vaguest possible language when wording his assignments, then upon grading he gives comments that have absolutely no value. This is a computer science class, yet points are deducted for spelling/grammar.

This professor does not know how to write assignments. He asks for one thing and grades another. His feedback is not useful, and I do not learn from it. On the contrary, after reading the feedback, I am confused and do not understand why he deducted points when the answer is there. DROP THIS CLASS!!!!

The questions is not in book or his notes. There is no answers to test questions - Only feedback to individual. For example, the test is coding program in Java. His feedback is a psuedo-code???. Some discuss questions have no participation from student.

Do not just expect to walk in and get a grade. Simco is tough, but fair. Definitely an animated speaker and excited about his subject. Not afraid to share his opinion of your work...so do not be insulted by his comments...he is trying to be helpful.

Comment:
Dr. Simco is kind of a mixed bag when it comes to teaching. He seems to have a good knowledge about the subject matter, however he likes to concentrate on his specialty, namely performance evaluation. While this can be valuable, it is not necessarily appropriate for a course such as operating system design which encompasses a wide area of topics.

Dr. Simco gets raked over the coals a lot. At least for the CS Ph.D. courses at Nova (I also had CISD 730 with him), if you know and understand the concepts contained in the reading list you ought to do okay on his exams. This might require some work. Also, he is a rather harsh but fair critic of writing assignments. Be relevant and focus.

Dr. Simco's approach to teaching can be a shocker for those from the entitelment crowd. The soon you realize that you need to think for yourself and not expect to be spoon fed the better off you will be. Dr. Simco draws the map but you have to find the treasure for yourself. It's a good map, too.

Those of you in a PhD program, it is NOT his job to teach you how to program or give you the answers to textbook questions. His job is to guide you into potential research areas and help you get better at researching and writing-w/o holding your hand. His grading comments were harsh BUT VERY useful if you could drop your egos & handle criticism.

Lecture notes are useless. Assignment is unclear. He doesn't teach at all and I can tell you all he will talk about is: dependability, reliabilty, scalability, etc., and yes, you can google on these terms and skip his lecture. Oops forgot, he doesn't teach, skip his class and don't need to google. Don't know why Nova still keeps him around.

This guy is full of himself. He's only taught what he knows. He seems to stay away from topics that he doesn't know best. For example: if he's teaching an Operating Systems class, all he will talk about is distributed systems or networking. Why would the university have two different courses; one in OS and the other in networking? Duh!
