Not worth it. Although he tries to be funny, it doesn't help you pass the test. Seems approachable but when I went to ask him a question he literally laughed in my face and told me to figure it out myself :/ Also he doesn't curve so even if the class average is a 10 you're all screwed

Hes a decent lecturer but has really difficult exams. Expects you to learn on your own. You have to study a lot to do well. I ended up P/NCing the class and managed to somehow get a P. This class is one reason why I decided to not go into the medical field. Try to avoid him for 114.

Besides his terrible teaching skills, he is not a very nice person and got excited stating that the class average for an exam was 36/100. Do not take his class, his tests are horrible

Problem is not just hard tests but also he doesnt prepare students for it All Gafney cares about is his future social security If the class average is around 40 students are not at fault He doesn't curve even when students deserve it and that is so unfair Otherwise if you're up for a challenge I recommend him.

ask anyone and they will tell you to avoid this professor. it is near impossible to get an A no matter how hard you study. there's no way to predict what is on exams and with a class that has so much material, that seems incredibly unfair. he doesn't emphasize anything so you don't know what's important and ignores the math. he was terrible

Lol to anyone who gives this guy a good rating. His class was unnecessarily difficult and he was horrible at teaching even the simplest concepts. I'm now taking chem 2 with Altman and the difference between him and Gafney is night and day. Gafney is simply incompetent as a professor and he doesn't even care that so many of us fail his class. AVOID!

The review below me couldn't be more accurate. Gafney does not know how to teach at all. He focuses on irrelevant concepts and then tests you on math that he never bothers to explain to the class. He set us up for failure and he's a shining example of Queen's College's failing chemistry program. Do yourself a favor and take someone else.

Insanely difficult exams that you're left unprepared for because there is no Aleks homework to help you practice, nor does he do very comprehensive examples in class. You THINK you're prepared for an exam, but you'll be wrong, every time. Seriously, do NOT take Gafney, your GPA WILL suffer. Even it you have to graduate later, just avoid him.

Here's the truth about Gafney. His exams are extremely difficult, however, when going to his lectures, you can tell he is an extremely intelligent person and one of the few professors in chem that can actually apply what is being learned in the lecture to real world situations. Plus, the recitation teachers grade the tests and most are just jerks.

VERY hard exams, possibly the hardest I have ever taken. I am an A student in science courses and cannot seem to comprehend anything in this class because of how poorly Gafney teaches. You can only learn so much on your own. He doesn't cover the mathematics of this course in depth at all, but that's what you're tested on. Take at your own risk.

Killing me. Tests are insanely hard. However, his lectures are interesting. He doesn't teach the material much but he does talk about cool stuff and gives examples to real world things. But, you will probably fail if you don't study. He doesn't help outside the class.

Took him for CHEM114 and CHEM 331. Got a C+ in 114 and A- in 331. He doesn't care too much for Gen Chem 2; he told me to teach myself during office hours. He's a different person when teaching 331, a bit more helpful but you better read before class. Bring a recorder if you tend to daydream. His homework problems show up on the exams. Do them.

his exams are very, very difficult. the departmental final was much easier and raised my class grade by a whole letter. It is nearly impossible to get an A in his class. Not recommended if you want to get into med school. He doesn't go over problems in lecture. I gained very little from his lectures. there are better chem114 professors

He knew all along that he could not teach Chem114 well, and he didn't tell us at the first lecture. That was mean. He makes hard tests, you can't predict what's on the test, he's stingy with partial credit, and he gives no curves. He's funny, but he doesn't prepare you for the final exam. He won't answer your questions or do problems with you.

Professor Gafney is an excellent lecturer and is not given enough credit. He is always available for questions. The only people who complain are the ones who don't go to class and expect everything to be easy in life.

Prof. Gafney is the worst instructor of any course I have encountered thus far at QC. No matter how hard we studied the class averaged 40-50's, with no curve. Do NOT be fooled by his corny jokes; this professor will twist a knife into your GPA and laugh while you argue your grade. Useless for questions both outside and inside the classroom.

Prof Gafney is a very knowledgeable professor and great for those interested in chemistry. However, his exams are difficult, he's a fairly strict grader and doesnt offer much outside help. Overall he's just a tenured, old, and strict prof
