He is a great teacher. He is really serious about his classes and takes a lot of pride in his work, and expects the same in his students, that's all. He is tough but if you attend all classes and go over the daily packets for the lesson, you'll be okay. He's strict but that's what it's like in Japan, so he's preparing you for a professional field.

Great teacher. He does have expectations for the class. He's open to other cultures and its funny to see his reaction. Since this is a language course, studying outside of class is highly recommended. He can be not clear at times, so always ask questions when you can. His strict pronunciation of words is helpful for speaking to native speakers.

Mr. Watanabe is a great teacher. It's important to dedicate the time. The japanese language is no joke, so make sure that you ask all the questions you can and do your homework. Spend time learning vocabulary and lab activities. He is very respectful. If you find him to be "mean," he isn't. He is strict and expects you to do your work.

Watanabe makes you work and actually learn the material. He's strict sure, but to learn a language you really need to have someone push you to do it. He shows you what his tests are like and gives you a very structured syllabus so nothing is a surprise. As long as you put in the effort and time, you'll get a good grade.

Ok Don't believe the hype if peeps say Watanabe is mean. No he's not I had him for both Basic Jap 1 and Daily Life in Japan. Sensei is funny but strict if you're not taking your work seriously. U can understand him with his accent and that... lol. He is laid back and gives extra credit. language class strict bcuz hes teaching his native language

Dude is a straight up beast. A ton of notes, but the quizes are pretty straightforward. Chill dude too. Never seen him get mad in 3 semesters in his classes. Just show up and you're good for at least a C.

Not sure why everyone thinks he's mean, he's actually a cheerful and funny man. The work he gives is pretty easy too if you're actually trying to learn Japanese. You may have to get over his accent a bit, but he's not incomprehensible. Pretty good singer too surprisingly.

You're going to come across a big difficulty spike if you came from Cook's class. Taking Watanabe is basically like taking Japanese boot camp. He reads very quickly when reviewing dialogue, puts more of an emphasis on the pronunciation of words and minutia in writing characters, and can give difficult tests about three sessions in a row.

Horrible teacher. Yells at you for taking notes. The entire class is sheer memorization. You have no concept of how the language works. There is no building blocks. It is simply this words means this, remember it, next word. Very strict. If you miss a single class you are greatly penalized. If you want to pass you must teach yourself entirely.

He is the worst professor ever. He expects so much of you, and more than what you can accomplish. He is a hard grader, and just the worst proffessor ever. Don't take him. He is hard to understand with that accent too.

Great Guy, Bad teacher! I passed the class (with lots of late night cramming, tutoring and extra credit) and still managed to leave the class knowing absolutely nothing about Japanese. After you get past the accent, you have to interpret what he says. Somewhat easy to pass, but information may not be helpful once you reach JPAN 111.

Had him for every course he taught prior to Spring 07. The man is extremely strict, Tells you to stop taking notes in his language classes. Openly shows favortism and penalizes those that openly challenge him. Clarity is so-so. Nakama, used for the JPAN courses, is only good if you do EVERYTHING and have a firm grasp of English Gammer.

Wow. A Japanese professor should not be so strict. If you're absent once he takes mad points off of your grade and if you miss a test that day, you get a zero. No one likes him and we're all pissed that he's teaching JPAN111. If he's the only teacher that's avaiable for Japanese I, just don't bother. Take another language.
