I was a 1st year grad. student at UCR this past year. I will not be returning because there simply are not enough professors like Professor Hornby. He revolutionized my whole way of looking at literature and life. His lessons are relevant and much of his teaching is through anecdotes! His class was the highlight of my week!!

Really harsh grader on the essays. A real critic. Even if you did good on the essay its still not good enough. The paper is 40% of your grade. Although, he usually give you more chances on the pop quizzes. For theat 120A, he wrote "there's a learning center for a reason" So for Theat 120B I worked harder & used the learning center and I did worse.

The problem isn't with Hornby, but the people who take his classes. I've taken multiple courses with him for electives, and people have talked and slept through the lecture. He's a little quiet (he's old), but he does try to project and make jokes. He doesn't take role, but he gives reading quizzes, so you have to read a play a week and show up.

A really nice guy but he's insanely boring. Just cut your wrist if your in his class. Bring a pillow to sit on though you need to watch his movies. He takes attendance but he doesn't really care if your there ( There were only 9 people in my class, lmao) Old and withering, he really tried to make it fun. Take this class ONLY if you REALLY need to.

I don't understand why he tells students that he doesn't grade attendance, the factors it in at the end. Has his favorites and isn't afraid to show it. The more of a suck-up you are, the better your grade will be, which is completely unfair to those of us interested in our education rather than being a teacher's pet in COLLEGE!

Doesn't care about his students. On emails and listserves, he's very rude and insulting. Even told a student that he'd never help her again because she didn't take his class. Overall just a grumpy old man.

I loved the translations chosen for this class-- they were so much easier to follow than most translations of classical plays pre- Italian Renaissance plays. The prof is extremely nice and concerned wants the students to get an A. His lectures tend to be a little disorganized, but his study guide has everything you need for the test.

Great professor. Knows his stuff. A little boring at times, but interesting. This class was pretty easy, as most of it was just watching movies. One paper, one multiple choice final. Watch the movies and you'll get an A.

He has to be the most boring professor I have ever had. He is extremely condescending to students and he thinks he knows everything. I hated him as a professor, even though his knowledge of theatre is extraordinary. I try at all costs to avoid taking his stupid, boring classes.

Wow, this man is the most boring creature on earth. I had 1 paper & 1 final & the rest of the time we watched movies. He'd skim each play & make little comments, but overall his lectures were worthless & sleep-inducing. Watch the movies & read sparknotes on your own time & you'll be more prepared.

Took the 120 series and THEA22 w/ Richard "Dick" Hornby, and I love him. You have to get through the slides, etc. but you'll always get at least one fantastic quote from each class. i.e. "Nurses were flying out of the window all around me!" and "When you get****, you just want to see organs." Fa

Although he is boring, he tries to get the students to read by giving quizes. He gives you lots of chances to get a good grade if you want one. I like him as a person but not as a prof. Take this only if you need to.

Hornby is such a bore. All he does is show slides all class long, and half the class leaves during break. Most of the taime you're asleep when the information you need comes out during class.

blah. I found this course difficult to enjoy. Hornby's slide shows are old fashioned. His voice puts everyone to sleep. and he never shows up for office hours. Play material is very easy. historical/ Architectual information is not.

Great professor of Shakespeare. The whole class is just watching movies. His final was very easy if you went to class.
