Dr. Tolley's classes are absolutely not ones that you can scrape by in or study for 30 minutes before the exam. He has high expectations for his students and himself, and it shows in the way that he conducts his course. He expects student's arguments to be well founded and corroborated by evidence. He prepares you for the real world, no soft throws

Comment:

Tolley is one of the best teachers you can have. You have to read and go to class to do well, but you will not regret it in the end because you will have learned so much. Being a Human Rights advocate, he is obviously biased - in a good way. He plays favorites to great students, so just be one and you'll win.

Took his POL 288 class and was overwhelmed. I had 20 hours that quarter so I had less time to devote to his class. Prepare for exams by memorizing definitions, articles, readings, and laws precisely. oddly enough, he graded his term paper (I did a book review) way easier than I expected. Tough but knowledgable

Comment:

One of the most biased men I have ever known in my life. Its near impossible to get a decent grade in his class unless you blindly follow everything he says, otherwise, good luck. The sad part being he doesn't try to hide it, this is not a teacher who favors debate and decent but dogma. Terrible proffesor, one of the worst Ive ever had.

Hard class & tough professor, but its well worth it. If you put in the work, you will learn a lot. Exams are very difficult.. don't skimp on the studying. Only take his class if you're committed. He is a brilliant man. I'll be taking many more of his classes.

It took about 3 weeks to get a grasp of how to approach Tolley's class, but after that, it wasn't too difficult at all. Do what is asked and that will make the class possible. Tolley is a very fair professor who is truly interested in his students. I recommend all his classes for potential law students.

Professor Tolley is simply outstanding. He is one of the truly outstanding teachers who insist on high quality, well reasoned work from his students. The accusations that he is biased in his grading are absolutely false. The students who disagreed with him in my section frequently suffered from a lack of logical reasoning...

One of the best professors I've had at UC. In my experience, claims that he penalizes students for their political views are completely false. I'm probably one of the more conservative students he's had, and I could not detect any bias in his grading. Prof. Tolley's classes are worth every cent you pay for tuition.

Great teacher. Lots of reading but you'll learn something substantial from every single reading. Do the work and go to class and you'll get an A. Also, he plays the devils advocate allot and ends up taking conservative positions, so I don't know what the people are talking about when they say he is biased. Best Political Science teacher at UC.
