really cool guy but his lectures are all over the place, even though they are interesting. had no idea what to study for the midterm and did not do well. talks about how grades don't matter, then grades very harshly (?!) He only got to about the second week on the syllabus, and only talked about 3 of the like 12 readings. confusing, but he is nice.

Horrible professor. His class has no structure, his lectures are rarely related to readings, he is unhelpful

Loves to hear himself talk. He goes off on insignificant tangents then cuts people off while they are trying to participate. I thought his class would be fun and interesting but its really just unplanned and all over the place. Completely disregards the syllabus and makes up assignments as he goes along.

The guy is LEGIT, what you see the first day of class is what you get. Cool, funny, but incredibly serious when it comes to the material, you can really tell he is passionate about his work. If you are not willing to make the effort take his advise and GET OUT, but if you stick with him get ready to have you mind blown! Would take again.

You can tell he thinks very highly of himself and it affects his attitude while teaching. I had to get a lot of help from other students because I didn't feel comfortable talking to him.

On the first day of class he said that he loved his job and you can really see that in his lectures. He is a tough grader, but he lets you know that syllabus day. Midterm was insanely hard. Most kids in the class failed. The best score I heard someone got was in the low 80s, but he offered a lot of xtra credit. Final was fair no trick questions.

I had no idea what was ever going on and he was hard to talk to. Then he seemed like he'd be really chill judging by his lectures but then out of nowhere he was a really tough grader.

I think he is usually a good teacher, but does not like to teach Comp Cultures to IPE students. He made this really clear in his attitude. He acted like he was doing us all a favor by gracing us with his presence and took little interest in it. He cancelled class several times. I think at some point he just stopped following a lesson plan.

Your experience with him depends on how much he likes you. He never bothered to learn my name and he never responded to my emails. But he answered my roommates immediately.

His class was disorganized - he assigned crazy long readings and then rarely talked about them, he was an unfair grader, and during class discussion he clearly showed bias to students he already knew and to certain ideas. May be good for Anthro majors but he clearly hates IPE majors.

BENAVIDES IS AMAZING!! This class opened my eyes to so many things and completely changed my life. I owe this man a lot. Funny, Smart as hell, great all around. Midterm, final, and one paper. midterm is hard-ish but the final is so easy it's almost laughable. really cares about his students and wants everyone to get A's. amazing man.

Prof. Benavides is the man! Definitely one of the better teachers at Fordham! This guy doesn't play around with boring powerpoints like so many intro courses do, instead, he makes you think. He comes to class eager to engage and loves a good, open discussion. Definitely would take again. Definitely recommend.

This was the greatest class I've taken at Fordham. Benavides is AMAZING, smart, and makes you think so differently. Exams are hard, I didn't do the readings and pretty much bombed the midterm, but, partly because of my participation (easy to do, just sharing thoughts!!), he dropped it. I would recommend the man as a rare gem of Fordham.

SHOUT OUT TO ALL UNDERGRAD AND GRAD STUDENTS, TAKE A BENAVIDES GRAD CLASS. This is not a class but an experience. Get ready to be agitated and learn something about the world and yourself. The readings are a must plus a weekly reflection on them. If you're not much of a reader, they may be rough to get through at first, but it's worth it.

Definitely recommend. Benavides is one of the best professors I've had at Fordham. He goes deep into the readings and makes sure you leave enlightened or with a headache. Mostly enlightened :) He truly cares about his students and is very understanding to whatever personal problems they are facing. He loves to teach! So please take him if you can.

I would not recommend. His class was dreadful. He used the word " right" at least 100 times every class and was incredibly boring. He talked about personal issues way too much and his own thesis work. The final and midterm were fine if you studied, but the readings were pointless. Avoid him. He ruined anthropology for me.

Professor Benavides is probably the best professor I've had here at Fordham. His emphasis is on making sure that his class learns, rather than strict grading. That being said, he does not give out easy A's and you will have to work hard for your grade in the class. However, you will come out of it having learned a lot.
