Cant agree with the previous postings. I took these courses and the comments dont make any sense. She never mentioned her book or articles. Yes, Saal is not easy, she expects a lot and is a tough grader. But shes very dedicated and serious about the stuff she teaches. And guided the work on my paper very intensively. Would take her course again.

When Ilka Saal has taught her Race and Ethnicity course in Belgium in 2010 she compressed a semester course to only 6 classes. Furthermore leaving the students up to themselves in figuring out how to study the theory and applying this in a master paper. I have trouble in recommending Ilka Saal as a dedicated professor.

Ilka Saal is a tough teacher, but I also believe she is a good one. She does a nice job of explaining the texts. She's also very friendly and has a positive attitude. But be warned, you will be all but forced to participate in her class. She will not hesitate to call you out. But don't let this overshadow the fact that she's still a good teacher.

I had Ms. Saal her first semester at UR. It was great to actually have a theater class that wasn't, well, in the theater department. Lots of different perspectives and theories on literature, especially if you get her started on Brecht. I personally can't talk to her outside of class very well, only because I get blush-y and geeky because yes, she's totally cute, as I'm sure everyone else can attest.

Ilka leads very interesting and fun discussions. She's very good at keeping the class' attention, even when its a three-hour sem. I loved her topics, very original, and I thought she was very fair and open to hear and share all kidns of ideas. She's so bright an cheery too, really loves her job.

Tough class my foot! She is not open at all to the validity to other ideas even if you can back them up with concrete textual support. She takes some horribly unintelligible ideas as a coherent synthesis of concepts. . . great if want to read much theatre
