Comment:

When discussions go on tangents he's great at facilitating and then reigning it back in so you know what to learn. The content isn't difficult, mostly memorization / a few problems about recognizing patterns. Writing in the linguistics style takes some trial and error but he's generous with grading. His emails are terse but he's REALLY nice IRL.

What a great guy. Even though I wasn't this great student, he was always there to help. Always gives partial credit if it is clear you at least tried. Do the readings and the homework. We'll miss him at W&M.

Super nice guy, treats students as equals, wants them to come to the answers themselves. Material was lots of theory & at times complicated, but he is so helpful. Tests are only hard bc there are so few points on them. Do the little bit of hw, it boosts your grade. I was introduced to a whole new way of thinking & though I struggled I enjoyed it.

Jack Martin is one of my favorite professors of all time. He is smart, funny and engaging. His grading is tough, but the class I took (Generative Syntax) was easy to do well in as long as you did the reading and attended class.

Easily the best prof I've had. He's so nice and the classes are relaxed w/ tons of discussion. He knows so much about linguistics (does field work w/ native american languages) and really wants his students to understand too. Plus, he's totally approachable. Take this class...it's great.

Yes indeed, he'll never steer you wrong. Keeps a relaxed atmosphere in class, is extremely informative (has worked on multiple Native American languages), and NEVER assigns too much work.

wow! this was the best class i've yet taken at this school. he's funny, interesting, and allows a good balance between lecturing and class discussion. also lets you have class outside on nice days.
