Awful professor who doesn't seem to know how to teach and speak in a clear matter.

A class for Gen Ed students, not art sudents. Dropped Direct Metal class when Stark couldn't perform simple solder during demonstration; took independent study class with Gonzalez instead. Stark knows nothing about paper making. Encourages students to not complete projects. Not helpful when needed. Rarely in class. Don't waste your time.

Comment:
This class is good to get your "A" Gen-Ed. Class once a week, usually only lasts an hour/hour and a half. Every week you write a paper (1 page long) on a question based on the artist from that weeks class. Although a pain in the ass, it's the easiest way to get rid of the aesthetic requirement. Just do a good job on the paper and you'll get an A

Jim Stark is a great professor. At first his lectures might seem incomprehensible and irrelevant but if you listen you'll get something out of them. He's incredibly helpful if you need it, but won't interfere if you don't want him to. Pretty much lets you do what you want, as long as you're productive and going somewhere. Give him a chance.

Although Stark lectures for a long time, and it sounds useless, he's got some good things to say and he's pretty funny if you pay attention. Our term got off to a slow start but once we really started working he left us alone to explore the materials. I mean, bronze and iron casting for an intro sculpture class, that's awesome!

Jim Stark is a superhero. He treats every student like a human being, which is not as common as it might seem. People sometimes complain that he isn't helpful, but if you're having trouble learning how to use something, ask. He's the most approachable teacher I've had and is not resentful in the least. You need to learn the tools by using them.

Hey is one of the nicest professors i have ever had....it is true that the first 5 classes were long 3 hour lectures....but now we work on whatever we want...i love it...half the time he leaves before us...he is very helpful, and caring....and is not **** at all...he is a hard grader, but if you speak to him and do all your work, you are fine!!!

Supposed to be a 3 hour class but you never stay more than an hour and a half tops, except the first one. A one page reaction paper every week to the artist who presented that week. Only problem is papers are never handed back so you go all semester without knowing a grade.

First few lectures are terrible, I never stayed more than 30 min. I did all the work the last weekend before it was due and got an A-. I never went to class, he didn't seem to mind/care. Easy class, but is annoying when you have to go

If you make it through the somewhat long-winded lectures of his intro classes, you'll find Jim's a good guy with a lot to teach. You also have to try not to get in the middle of the rather petty stuff that goes on between him and Ron Gonzalez.

terrible and corrupt. I never sat through a string of more boring lectures in an art class ever. If you have the choice, don't take the class it will save hours of your life.

I didn't find any gender bias -- I'm female and he helped me as much as others. Very welcoming to non-art major. Very human. Rambles on art topics, I found, so that's good.

Stark is very affable, likes to have fun, cool dog/Delorean/etc. But if you are female, and you want to learn to weld, pour metal, you know, learn... look elsewhere.

He has yet to give any demonstrations, offer any examples, or instruct us in any way for this class. When he gives feedback it is usually derogatory about the feelings your portraying in your journal, INSTEAD of actally offering a critique of your art.

I cannot believe the negative comments...the man brings his dog to class, seems like he smokes up all the time, he is amazingly chill and laid back, rambles about his own life which is cool, he is never in a rush or a hurry, hes a good all around guy.

A bit boring but overall a good guy. Leave him be, art is mostly crap anyway, so his ramblings are relevant.
