Comment:
This is a pretty easy class. Just go to lecture and pay close attention.I received an A- and hardly did any work. Perkowski is a little stubborn and set in his ways but he really is a good guy if you try to approach him. He's also extremely cultured and well traveled, he has crazy/creepy stories as well. Great for 2nd writing requirement.

I agree with the person below me. Prof Perkowski revolutionized his field; he knows his stuff. Maybe if you understood that folklore IS telling stories, then you would understand the value of his lectures. The mid-term and final were very fair. All you have to do is go to lecture. And like 1/3 of the lectures are films. A very good class!!

Awful, terrible, horrible. I should've listened to other recs before signing up for this. I got a D on the midterm b/c I didn't remember these stupid, meaningless details. He's just such a jerk on top of that, and I learned absolutely nothing in this class. This is supposed to be an easy class, and I got a B. Grad schools will love that. Avoid JLP.

Comment:
Perkowski is actually a very nice man and is willing to talk outside of class, but this class was HORRIBLE. There wasn't a single class when we stayed on topic, he goes off on the worst, longest tangents, stories completely unrelated to linguistics. We covered maybe half the material on the syllabus, but still have to know everything for tests

Mediocre lecturer. The comments about tangents are all correct. Likes to tell stories, which are amusing. Ask him about the parrot from Mexico.

Class was really easy, however it was the TA's that made it tolerable. Jan is the worst lecturer i have ever had to listen to. He would go off on tangents about things he did 40 years ago and even showed us family photos of his aunt. The lectures were retarded i either slept or didnt go at all. Take if you want an easy grade though.

I liked his bowties and when he did accents. Other than that I had no idea what was going on.

Probably the worst class I've ever taken. Anywhere. He likes to listen to himself talk and the lectures are rarely relevant to the material at hand. Attendance is taken daily. The only highlight was my TA - Mark Purves - who made the course bearable.

Mean man... inherantly mean. Goes off on tangets and never comes back. The TAs were confused, and I think one of them even rolled his eyes at what was being said. Movies were great, but god forbid you miss one and try to rent it the week of an exam. Stay away... mean man!

You can learn a lot from this guy if you go to class and do the work. If you go in thinking it's a gut and then find out otherwise when it's too late and you've skipped a bunch of classes, that's your problem.

Heheh... he's got his ups and his downs, but basically knows what he's talking about. The class is a gut for the most part.

This guy is a pyscho. Unless you are dark and deranged do not take this class. If that's not enough, he rambles, goes off on tangents, and is generally boring and self-absorbed. Freaks take and enjoy this class.
