From my experience with Jeremy, he is an average professor, not bad or not outstanding. He is intelligent but sometimes he will go off topic in lectures. His slides were confusing and not clear. He is not a tough grade, but there are a ton of readings per week, and a big term paper. The midterm and exam weren't difficult. I got an A in the class.

Lectures are pretty useless, I recommend picking 3 countries of the 5 and study them on your own from day 1 (come to class when he gives lectures on your chosen countries). I learned more in my TA session than the lecture could ever provide. SO many awkward silences. Hes a smart guy, but he doesnt know how to teach the important stuff.

Poor lecturer. Fascination subject matter, but often gets sidetracked or goes on tangents that are not clear because his powerpoint slides dont relate. Also if youre not a polisci major, the lectures and concepts will not make any sense to you (do not take this class for an elective)

If you don't read the books, you have to go to the lectures or vice versa. Don't do both and you're screwed. Note-taking is very important since some things in the exams are not in slides and are hidden in the books. The exams are very easy if you prepare for them. He sometimes sidetracks or mumbles but is very engaging and passionate nonetheless.

The subject matter is very interesting, but his powerpoints need a lot of revision to be more concise and less all over the place. Beware- do not email him if you are having trouble, just email your TA as he is quite rude over email. 2 Textbooks req. The final has 80 terms and only 10 on test. Otherwise he gives out full review sheets.

if you take his lectures as sort of a story telling session, it is so easy to remember almost all the content

Beware the term paper; it's a textbook chapter in itself. Paltiel's lectures are a general overview of the readings and towards the second half of the semester he becomes a little disoriented, sidetracked easily and doesn't explain things well. I think he's taught this class for so long he just forgets what he's supposed to be teaching each class.

Lectures are not bad. But he does rant. He loves China. Unfortunately he is not the best at responding to emails. He provides a midterm and final exam review. However, gives 77 terms and there is only 10 on the exam. Other than that. Hes not horrible.

Absolutely brilliant man. He loves teaching his students and sharing his stories. Most of what I learned about FP of Asia was through his personal stories. I've taken several classes with him and always enjoyed them. Lots of reading though, more than normal for 4th year, but you can get away with not doing them. Would 100% take any class with him

I found Mr. Paltiel to be really engaged with the material, and teaches it in a simplistic interesting manner. If you don't mind his awkward jokes and a small disorganization on cuLearn with the powerpoints the class is an interesting class that'll help in others, he's genuinely a nice guy too.

His lectures are long but interesting. He sprinkles anecdotes throughout the dryer theoretical parts to keep you engaged. However, this can make the direction of his lectures unclear and not in line with the slides. Attendance is hence important. Fair marker - you'll have to work for it but it's more than possible to get a good grade.

He is not a good professor. If he does not like you then you wont do good in the class. He judges people without knowing them. He will make your life hard for no reason.

Not recommended. Nice guy but his lectures are not organized. Beats around the bush with irrelevant historical events to get to his point. Doesn't follow slides well, usually what he's talking about is unrelated to slides. Doesn't present information clearly at all. Definitely not my preferred teaching method.

Jeremy is one of the best professors at Carleton University and his lectures are always interesting. He holds office hours on a consistent basis and if you ever have any questions he is always available by email. If you like international relations/ political science Paltiel is a must. I highly recommend his 4th year class on Asian foreign policy.

Jeremy is an excellent professor and a really nice guy. He's extremely knowledgeable about Asia and his passion shows through in class. He assigns substantial readings but class discussion is really interesting and he's not the kind of prof to call people out. I definitely recommend taking his class in 4th year.

He knows a lot about China and his interest is clear. I thought he was great, but it does take some time to get used to him, and his style. He does like to laugh at his own jokes, which can be a little awkward. Assignments were pretty easy if you follow his instructions and he gave study questions prior to the exam. Definitely recommend this class!

Has the potential to be a great class, though I would recommend taking this class with him. Not being an expert, I knew more information than he did regarding certain countries he was lecturing on (and some information he gave was false). He is however a nice guy, very approachable, and the marks came pretty easy. (Just read the power points.)

I had Professor Paltiel for PSCI 4803 East Asian Foreign Policy and I absolutely love his class. He is very knowledgeable guy, very passionate about what he teaches and has a lot of personal experience which entertained me. Dont miss any seminars and you will do great . I would definitely recommend him.

I was really disappointed by this class! I had a few problems that were never resolved. Approaching the professor was impossible. Talking to the professor was impossible. I went to the department to address my problems, and they told me that I had to go through the professor! Overall, I'm really disappointed.

Found this course odd. Professor clearly loves his subject, but is obsessively close to China. Learning experience was mixed. Good readings. Some good lectures. He should take a step back on occasion.
