He was intense, but great. I had to think about and consider things, that had never even crossed my mind before. This gentlemen should be teaching at Stanford or Harvard. I certainly got my mind blown. It was worth every penny.

Probably one of the best professors I ever had. He forced you to think, and on extremely difficult subjects. A lot of students could not handle his lectures, because he would go to extremes. If you had a high IQ, and can handle difficult subject matter, then this was the class for you. Thanks for opening my eyes Prof. Oates.

If people were offended they were offended by philosophy, not Oates. He was clear, informed, intelligent on the spot. He didn't think the students were dumb, but some tended to prove they were, in class and apparently on this message board.

Oates was awesome! People who are offended by him don't get that its a Philosophy class- he is looking to portray opinions and thoughts to understand intrinsic, extrinsic and hedonism values/perspectives - I thought the class was awesome and an amazing teacher who portrays Philosophy so well!

this guy knows his material inside and out. very passionate about philosophy, and is not afraid to shock students. his tests can be tough, but nothing out of the ordinary. take this class with an open mind and you will learn a good deal.

If you don't like opinionated people don't take this class. He likes to offend and shock students to prove his points in lecture. Many get up and leave-one girl cried. It makes for an interesteing class if you don't want to fight with him though.
