Joan Deppa is a sweet woman who truly works hard to make sure her students understand grammar. She put together an amazing textbookclass, with interesting anecdotes to illustrate a not-so-interesting subject. It is difficult to get a good grade, but if you put the time in and go to her she's always willing to help! Great at responding to emails

J Depps is the worst. Make sure you complete every assignment (even the quizes at the end of her self-narrated online textbook), otherwise you will fail the class. If you show up, participate on Top Hat, and do all the work, you can do well. Her lectures are torture so make sure you bring your laptop, you can get other classwork done during them.

Comment:

Professor is a wonderful woman, but don't take the COM 101 with her if you can avoid it. Her use of Top Hat doesn't help at all, and it doesn't encourage people to pay attention at all. At the end of the day, it's boring grammar. I haven't paid attention at all but I have reviewed a ton for the final and learned everything in about 5 hours.

The class is pretty awful. Mostly everyone does awful on the tests. Deppa is pretty fair when it comes to making up grades for the "final" final.. but barely learned anything the whole semester. Just not a good class

She's a sweet old lady but the course matter is just so boring. Her lectures are long, but relatively easy. Make sure you do the pre and post-tests, strangely enough she gives credit for them but the syllabus doesn't make it clear. Workload wasn't bad but her grading was odd. Some friends failed it for not taking the pre and post tests.

Man was this class terrible, boring, and confusing. Prof. Deppa tries to integrate technology into her lectures, but her lack of organization and clarity is the worst. If you're in Newhouse you'll have to take the class, just try not to fall asleep.

This class is every bit of grammar slammer. I will say you learn a lot in the class in a short amount of time. The TA's are extremely helpful. Currently I am in the class and I attend the TA's office hours weekly just to get a grasp of the lesson. Her lectures are extremely boring. She uses Top hat too so you basically have to attend class.

Oh, this class. It really is excruciating at points. It's obviously helpful in the sense that we learn a lot about grammar that we've likely never learned before, but the way it's taught needs severe improvement. It lacks helpful feedback during the class and you have to learn everything on your own time. It's tough to grasp the content that way.

Professor Deppa was one of the worst professors I have ever had. The course has the potential to teach students a lot about grammar, but Deppa is extremely unorganized and late in returning everything back. We only completed half the online text because she didn't have time to teach us the rest. Just be glad its 1x a week!

Probly a nice lady but she is a TERRIBLE professor. An impossible boring class. The fact that my MOTHER had her when she was at Syracuse just shows how old and out of place she is. She tries to stay "hip" by using technology in her lectures and teachings...it doesn't work. Didn't learn crap. Just an all-around terrible experience.

Joanie D is a lovely woman. The class is easy because you can resubmit most assignments until you get 100%. There are a lot of small assignments. It's plain and simple - she knows her grammar. Don't dislike her because you are bad at grammar and blame her because you didn't try. It's an easy 1-credit mandatory course. Bring your laptop or die!

Professor Deppa is a delightful woman. She is very passionate about grammar. Her quirky humor dances on the line of cringe-worthy and hilarious. She does tend to mess up grading for everyone on every assignment, which is very inconvenient. However, if you put some effort in, the class will be a lot of fun and a breeze.

Professor Deppa is a delightful woman. She is clearly passionate about the English language. Her attempts at humor dance on the line of cringe-worthy and hilarious. As sweet and helpful as she is, she is a bit scatter-brained, consistently having to correct grading mistakes. If you stay on top of your work, her class will be a fun experience.
