Comment:
Professor Rappaport has a very deep knowledge of anthropology and theory more generally. Use it! In her anthropology theory class, each session she first gave students an intricate overview to situate the readings in, included free writing and group discussion exercises, and expected a lot of participation. Silences bothered her so prepare to speak

I took Professor Rappaport's Anthropological Theory class and loved it. The material is difficult, and her ultimate goal is for you as a student to understand it. Her class is fascinating and managed to grip my attention despite being 2.5 hours long on a Wednesday afternoon. I left each week feeling mentally and academically better off.

Joanne is a nice woman who came highly recommended by a lot of people. But taking her Race and Ethnicity in lat.Am class -which I expected to love - was an unbelievably painful and mindnumbing experience.Books are enormous, anthropological and boring, she is slow and thinks we're idiots, and the essential conclusion to everything was it's relative.

This class is really great. Professor Rappaport is soft-spoken and really interested in guiding conversation. Definitely do the readings, which are all really fascinating, but you don't have to finish if you can't. 3 papers, which she allows rewrites on for a B- or less. She's a laid-back teacher and you will read her book in class. Recommended

Half the time I was looking around the room to see if anyone else was noticing how completely spaced out and incoherent her ramblings were. This class was really terrible. Unless you are an amazing BSer or have a profound interest in cultural anthropology , do not take this. Her book, which we had to read, was...there are no words for how silly.

Prof. Rappaport comes off as a bit cold but is a great teacher and warm person once you give her a chance.
