Chef Orate has been ready to retire for quite some time. While I hear he was once a great professor, this is no longer the case. He is disrespectful and takes advantage of his students. He is so out of touch with the industry and gives students a false impression of what the field is really like leaving us unprepared upon completion of the program.

Chef Joe is a great teacher. Just be prepared for someone who wants to know who is in it to win it or who is just there to mess around in the kitchen. Make sure you listen the first time because he rarely repeats himself. Especially when he teaches knife skills (useful tip for fruit carving also)!!! Do not be scared off he is a great guy!

Chef Joe is probably one of the most coolest down to earth guys i have met yet. If you don't want to learn and take his class seriously then don't bother taking it.He is there to help you grow and if you show you don't care, he won't care. I highly reccomend taking any of his classes if you are serious about getting into the culinary field.

Chef Joe is by far one of the coolest guys I've ever met! at first he seems really intimidating, but once the semester carries on he is really cool guy. His tests are exactly from the homework and lectures. People would complain that he is a hard teacherbut you got to remember that in the field you will encounter many kinds of peopleJoe is a boss

Chef Orate has several problems as an educator: he is subject to anger management issues and frequent outbursts of rage, he lacks organizational skills, he has poor communication skills, he exhibits behaviors typically associated with workplace harassment; and he often displays passive/aggressive behaviors. I found another local program to attend.

Being in the culinary industry is not as easy as AI commercials make it out to be and Chef Joe keeps it real. He will work with you if your really interested in the field and that prepared me well for the rigors of working in the kitchen. If it wasnt for him the Culinary Arts program at Grossmont wouldnt be as respected in the field as it is.

Words that can be used to describe Chef Joe, Arrogant, Dismissive, Uncaring. In other words he is a Professional Chef. My advice is suck it up and get use to it because the industry you are wanting to get into is full of people just like him. His personality alone is his best teaching tool.

Chef Joe is a pretty intense personality. You will find that you either like him or hate him! What you see is what you get, Its His kitchen, his rules. As long as you are there to learn, dressed appropriately, and willing to hear constructive criticism, you are good to go. Dont expect this to be a breeze..cuz the industry is definitely NOT!!

He certainly seems like he is ready for retirement. Not a hard class, though any question he deems dumb will not be answered. I feel like I could be learning a ton more. We had a sub last week and I learned more in that 5 hours than I have in the whole 10 weeks with Chef Orate. Hopefully he retires so someone who wants to teach can.

Chef Joe is a horrible instructor. Not helpful, very sarcastic and chauvinistic. Doesn't use fresh ingredients and doesn't teach cooking techniques accurately. His assistant Steve is equally awful. The atmosphere in the classroom is tense and oppressive!

Chef Joe is a terrible teacher, though he may have been a decent chef at one point in time. He contradicts himself then doesn't answer questions. He is rude and arrogant during class frequently. I wouldn't take him again if there were other choices, but there aren't.

Great Chef! You either love him or hate him. Not to much in the middle. Follow directions, think for yourself, and you'll be fine. It seems the younger students have more of a hard time dealing with him. Maybe because they still have growing up to do or they are unware of how the work place operates.

Chec Joe is wonderful. In my opinion students learn the most when they step back, close their mouth, and watch & learn. Chef Joe does not teach recipes, he teaches technique and teaches students to experiment with ingredients. Chef Joe is also a 2 time Gold Metalist at the Culinary Olympics, so he does know what he is talking about.
