Dr. Bowles seemingly has suffered a stroke but the university sees fit to keep him in front of a classroom

He takes his class very seriously, but is somewhat misguided. He rambles on a lot. Gives tests in a design class, which baffles me.

Gives tests in a design class... We met for half of the class and he expected us to start designing in the other half. Take someone else for your capstone project and save yourself the headache.

If they were to put a rock at the front of the class and tell you to stare at it for 1:15 minutes, you would begin to understand the boredom inherent in this class. My only C ever, I've never gotten below a B+ otherwise. The labs are impossible. The tests are not as bad but still very hard.

Comment:
Very boring; very easy class if you already know Java. One lab per week. TA was okay. If you don't know enough of algorithmic design, most of the needed code is given in class. If you attend class, you don't need the textbook. Lab manual actually does not correctly reflect Java standards, but he teaches in the manner of the lab manual. If you want a good grade, take Bowles.

Bowles will put an insomiac to sleep. His class is 1:15mins of him writing down information that has no relevance to the test. His final exam did not measure what he taught in the class. Only two hw assignments but labs due every week. Isn't very helpful at all. If you can avoid taking him unless you already understand the class pretty well.

He explains everything in the most minute details. You can pass the class without opening the book. The problem, however, is him. He's so boring and slow that I've left class to check my Myspace, came back, and did not miss a thing. Doesn't care about attendance, because he knows you'll stop coming eventually. TAs aren't the best, except Fomby

He says one thing the book another and the lab manual another. Unless you live for Java take somebody else. The man doesnt help much he refers you to the TA who is about as useful as a sack of bricks. Avoid at all costs.

He taught a good class in a way that what you learned could actually be used in the real world. He is a good guy.

Would rather type full code implementations up on the board than teach the fundamental concepts behind them. Extremely dry, boring lectures which are only useful if you need a letter-by-letter implementation for the labs. Tests are fair, though a little to heavy on vocab.

do not take him for this class. the lectures are ok as well as the tests. but the labs are IMPOSSIBLE. they will take you 12hrs per lab unless you are a programming dork.
