This class is a joke. Teacher mumbles, expects you to keep up with notes while he talks non-stop. Only 2 tests for your entire grade, which are strictly memorization of random facts- mostly just people's names and states (mentioned once in 300+ page required books for class). I learned NOTHING. Don't take unless you want your GPA lowered.

His lectures do not really have guidelines, but if you pay attention you can tell what is on the test or not. He does ramble, but he is very knowledgeable about a variety of subjects, and his stories are entertaining. His tests get ridiculous curves, so don't sweat them too much.

Galiher is up there in age, and sometimes he appears to be losing it. He'll forget to change powerpoint slides and sometimes seems to forget where he's at. His teaching style is also very old school. Nevertheless I thought he had a certain charm to him and he at least tries to keep class interesting. He'd often break lecture with a funny story.

Good news and bad news. Good news: There are only 2 exams. Bad news: There are only 2 exams. If you do well on both exams, you get an A. If you struggle with the first one, you don't get much opportunity to bring up your grade. I found the tests to be fairly easy if you read the required books.

I'm surprised by all the negative reviews. In my hectic 18-hour schedule last semester, this was my favorite class. I thought his lectures were funny and he made class enjoyable. Sometimes he'd tell funny stories. There's also little work; your entire grade is based off 2 exams that should be easy if you read the texts and gloss over the notes.

This class was absolutely horrible. His lectures are completely unorganized and he rambles about useless things. I was so excited to take this class originally and it has turned out to be the worst one I've ever taken. He thinks women are best with no opinions (direct quote) Tests are either completely random minute details or what he thinks.

This man is awful. He pulls test questions out of nowhere. His lectures put you to sleep & he talks about pointless things. Avoid at all costs.

I can't put into words the hatred I have for this class. He rambles on and on, it's nearly impossible to pay attention. He loves talking about things completely irrelevant to criminology - Todd Akin is his favorite subject. The tests have nothing to do with relevant material, just know where people went to school and you'll get at least half right.

Galliher is extremely partisan and promotes everything liberal during lecture, but in general he seems like a nice guy. The lecture topics are genuinely interesting, but I found it difficult to concentrate during class. The exams were super straight forward and there were no trick questions, as long as you read the books and go to lecture, your set

AVOID HIM! Crazy man who rambles on and on and is too high to remember what he covered in lecture when he makes the exam. Books equally incomprehensible because he wrote them! Grade based on 2 impossible exams. DO NOT take it! I survived, only because it was too late to drop. (The midterm falls after drop period)

I agree that his lectures are incomprehensible and a complete waste of time. Exams were completely unfair -- don't study, it won't help. This guy is old and bitter and needs to retire immediately. In the meantime, avoid.

Very opinionated but a great class. If you have a problem with partisanship in the classroom you should avoid it, but if you can keep an open mind and sort out the information yourself without letting the bias affect you a very cool, informative course. Read the books, study the notes, attend class and you'll get a decent grade. Very funny guy too.

I don't know what everyone's on about that he's so liberal. He's really not (but that may be a reflection of my liberalism more than his). His lectures are incomprehensible and rambling and his tests cover random minutia that (to me) seemed pointless.

Very liberal, but he is a sociologist after all. He will spend some time advocating his views in class, but he has interesting ideas you might not have heard before. He's funny in an old man sort of way, and the tests aren't bad if you study.

INCREDIBLY INTELLIGENT MAN! I can see how others would reject his way of straight-shooting teaching but it's a relief compared to other classes where you just read over slides etc. He truly engages in class, and won't apologize for the FACTS he presents in class from all of his experience, even if they offend some. It's not easy; take it anyways!!!

John was the reason I declared sociology as a major. The only reason people are giving him poor ratings is because he is VERY liberal and possibly could offend someone but you cannot go into a sociology class and be close minded because you will get nothing out of it. When he starts teaching again (he is currently doing research) take his class!

Wastes taxpayer money preaching his liberal views to a captive audience instead of teaching. Once wasted 20 minutes talking about how to get to the anti-death penalty rally. Spells marijuana "marihuana" to avoid offending hispanics. A real piece of work.
