This is more of an English writing class than it is learning how to speak in public. "APA" mandatory writing, with tons of drafts and final papers due, then giving a speech about the paper. If you love yourself and want a clear understanding on the assignments, don't take this class. He is not always clear on assignments/criteria and VERY unorganized. He can be a really sweet guy, but not the best professor out there for this class.

Comment:

Hannigan is a great professor. I took a couple of his classes, comm 1 he was an APA stickler and graded harshly. His grading set the tone for his expectations and once you learn it makes your life easier. Go to class and finish all assignments, be respectful because he does care! I recommend taking his interpersonal class, he does a great job!

He makes everything much harder than it has to be ive taken a couple of his courses and they were awful. I passed both of the classes and still I wish I could redo it all and take it with a different professor. I once seen him make a student cry mid lecture because he kept trying to correct her as she was trying to share an emotional story.

Prof. gave amazing lectures that were always interesting and well thought out, but the content was often not related and I felt that a lot of time was wasted with unrelated lecture. His grading didn't help me learn what he was trying to teach. I became more fearful about putting periods in the right spot than giving a good speech.

Great professor! You really do learn a lot and the work is very manageable. Even though his guidelines sometimes suck, just follow them and you'll easily pass. My only complaint is his lectures about persuasion speech could have totally been done in one day. Don't skip class.

I took comm over winter so it was very fast. John helped me figure out my outlines and speeches so I would be prepared, and was very encouraging to everyone in class and supportive. He made a welcoming environment and wanted everyone to succeed. I didn't take any notes during lecture, but you do need the book and the study guide to pass the tests.

Worst comm teacher in WVC. Has to many speeches. Does not help students pass. Favouritism. Other Comm teacher has three speeches. John has 6 speeches and a written midterm. Uses unnecessary websites that you need to subscribe too. Also a completely unnecessary book.

Talented educator with a lot of skill in teaching, I took all his courses. Very approachable, willing to work with you, listens incredibly well. However, he has a sheltered view on some topics. Encourages you to challenge him! (Dont. Youll lose. Its engineered that way) steer clear of his political views and youll learn an incredible amount.

I took John for Comm 004 and now Comm 008. Awesome Professor and cares about his students. There are a few exams but most of the material is really learning the content of the class to make you a better person and communicator. If you skip class and don't care then this isn't the class for you. Otherwise take it, awesome class!

He was the worst teacher I had. He was very rude and had a dumb attendance policy. If you're late he takes the same amount of points off as if you were absent. Didn't feel like I learned anything besides APA. Tries hard to make sure you don't get a good grade. Avoid him!

Very friendly and caring professor. Goes on tangents a lot. He likes to debate and presents a lot of his political opinions as facts. Very easy class, just show up, listen, raise your hand every once in a while and you'll be fine. Projects and exams are well-explained and fairly straightforward.

This semester's almost half way done. I have to say Dr. John is the best teacher I have ever had. He cares if his students learn the knowledges he teaches . So far, I have redone the APA test 5 times. He is patiently to check the answers with commands every time. It is very excited to watch my classmates are getting better at speaking. Great class

Really knowledgeable on the subject, but lots of difficulty with Canvas, making the class question all assignments. The work, while not too difficult, was very abundant. If you miss one class, you can not get an A, no matter how hard you try.
