Comment:
I must say I was highly disappointed by McClure's handling of the class. Lit 220 is supposed to teach you how to analyze novels. McClure does not do this. He analyzes them, tells you what to write about and what opinion to write with, and then you receive a good grade if your essay agrees with his analysis. Look elsewhere.

This guy LOVES to hear himself talk. He's ridiculous. But if you just spit back what he says on your papers, etc you can easily end up with an A or a B.

Unlike what others are saying, Prof. McClure is an amazing professor. I took his Literature and Spirituality class and enjoyed every second of it. He is always open to anyone's opinions and interpretations of text and genuinely wants his students to do well. I got an A in his class without much effort because he was that enjoyable!

Contrary to some of these comments I took McClure for Lit and Spirituality and the material he works with is indeed fastpaced and challenging but the class was awesome. I wanted to read the books and he was impressed when I went above and beyond his expectations. Try and get involved in class discussions and you're golden. LOVE him!

I love Mcclure because he's willing to look at the text from any angle that's mentioned with openness. It's refreshing to take a class with him because he does not limit ideas and freedom of thought. He's very intelligent, and is passionate about what he teaches. He keeps class interesting. Take him!

Comment:
He's not a professor of literature. To teach literature, you have to analyze the text and draw conclusions FROM the text. McClure does it the opposite: he has an idea, and looks to the text to support HIS idea. His approach does not do the novels any justice. For the love of literature, take a professor who stresses close reading. Please.

Comment:
He rambles in front of the room for 80 minutes about big concepts, like vitalism and experimentalism, while never bothering to read the text closely. He likes to relate everything back to the concept of experimentalism. It's a narrow approach to the reading. He's not a real English teacher. Beware Dowling-ites.

Great professor. It's just a shame that the stuff he teaches in 220 isn't as exciting as he tries to make it sound. He repeats a lot of material week after week, but it helps ingrain it all into your head after a while, which certainly helps on exams. TAs grade your papers, he grades the exams.

You cant judge him based on 220, you have to take him for another, higher level course where he shines. He is without a doubt the smartest, most interesting, coolest teacher I have ever had. I take away so much more than just English lessons after walking away from this class. If I could take him for every english class I would. L O V E him.

I took Principles of Literary Study (350:220). John McClure is intelligent, interested in his students, clear, and helpful. The class is not easy, as lots of reading is required, but if you put in the time to do the work and to copy notes, you'll do well. He is always open to help you outside of class if you are struggling.

By the end of the class, you will hate it when he says "Principles and Practices." The material isn't the most exciting and he doesn't try to make it exciting. Not and easy class to stay awake for. Take notes because the powerpoints are somewhat useless.

At first he was a little boring as most of these comments indicate, but once I got used to him and got into the novels, he became more entertaining. Also, he was so nice in office hours and extremely helpful even though the TA grades all my work. He also seemed pretty fair since my grade was probably borderline and still got an A.

If you want to be bored and like wiping the drool off your face.. then this is the guy for you! He is so boring and his lectures are like watching paint dry. He makes up words to support outrageous theories. You participate in class like crazy and get told you are brilliant, but yet stay SO shy from an A.

Boring... if you actually enjoy literature, he's not someone to listen to. He provides unorganized lectures and put me to sleep every time. Can't complain too much, though... it's an easy A. Just go to recitation.

I didn't think I would like this class because I hated prin.of lit study 219 with a different prof and got a C in tht class. But I really enjoyed this class and wound up getting an A. My TA graded the papers very fairly and the exams were easy to get an A on without a lot of studying. It was a great class, a little boring but books were somewhat
