Grad students learn from his courses. Undergrads who do not work hard, will not appreciate his class. It could be boring but if you are engaged in the course, you will love it. Original perspective. He is a good researcher. He is concise and develop clear topic sentences. He also teaches grammar.

An overall interesting class. Looked at world history from a new perspective and the workload wasn't too bad. The class isn't easy but the lectures are pretty good. He does his best to be engaging and clear.

Nice guy. Lectures are on interesting subjects and he uses his powerpoints well. Leads discussions sections which is a little daunting but nice of him to do so. Just 3 short papers on primary sources throughout the semester, not that much work required, but if you do it, you will learn a lot.

I though his class was great. Tons of readings, yes, but you get a lot out of it. If you are just trying to pass by, think twice: you have to work to get A's in his papers! But in return, you will get one of the best feedbacks ever to improve your writing style.

Arrogant. Dry, seemingly pointless lectures. He expected his students (which were mostly freshmen) to write a 7 page paper on 2 big books within the first 2-3 weeks of school. He thus spoiled my first weeks at Georgetown. You'll do well on exams if you have the ability to cram tons of info.

Definitely NOT an interesting lecturer in my opinion... This is by far one of the useless and repetitive classes I've ever taken. Complete waste of time-- can we talk about colonialism ANY MORE?!?!

Pretty interesting lectures, and offers some funny quirks to lighten the mood. Definitely knows his stuff. Midterm difficult in the sense that it had some unexpected questions, but not impossible. Be prepare for a lot of reading(novels/biographies)!

Right, so maybe I am the only one who likes this class. I think the lectures are really interesting (although he does seem to like to hear himself talk). The midterm wasn't terrible.

Perhaps most who answered are undergrads wanting to avoid tough classes, but McNeil will help your writing (even at the graduate level) and he can very concisely and clearly sum up years of history. One of my best classes.
