Comment:

Avoid his classes if you can. Treats a Second year class as if it were a high school history course. Painful group projects that are completely pointless. His clarity for the final paper is completely muddled. Expects you to write SOLELY on a primary document with nothing else supporting it. Does not explain his expectations at all.

Helpful in person, not over emails. I found his tests in 255 and 256 rather easy, but the group work could be frustrating. He was clearly interested in the material, but sometimes it was difficult to follow his lectures. Overall, a good experience if you're ready to listen and learn

Pros: Has a keen interest in the subject material. Ties in relevant current events to course material, encourages class discussion. Cons: Unprofessional demeanor. Will not reply to emails unless requested to do so. Does not respond reliably to emails when requested to do so. Do not take a class with Dr. John Price unless you need to.

I had nightmares about this class for almost a year after taking it. My private experiences dealing with Dr. Price were quite an unsettling experience for me.

His exams or tests were actually really easy as he provided all the names you needed to know. His essay however; would be the deterrent to taking this class. He did not outline what he wanted AT ALL, which resulted in much of the class doing very poorly. Also, he expects you to read an insane amount compared to other classes. Would avoid

worst class i have taken at uvic. lectures were useless, he was totally disorganized and lacked any clear direction. also a hard and very unfair marker on papers and tests; expects you to know exactly what he wants, but doesn't really tell you..even when you ask. don't take his class, it is a waste of time and money.

quite possibly the worst professor i have ever had. poorly crafted exams. unavailable prof. brutal essay marking. when i called him on my original grade and threatened to go to the university he changed my mark on the spot. lectures are all over the place. very hard final! avoid!

Nice person, a bit boring, has been teaching too long to listen to any constructive criticism. I would't recommend this class, text is ridiculously long and he expects you to read almost all of it. tests are easy, but go to class as its mostly based on lectures with weird random knowledge from text. Hard marker on papers and unclear instructions!

this guy is ridiculous. completely unavailable. he will walk away from you while you are talking to him every single time. i have never experienced a prof with such poor manners. he has tenure so i guess he just doesnt care

Comment:

The lectures are a tad dry, and his "quizzes" (i.e. 40 mark midterms) are difficult unless you study the right things. However, after the first midterm, he was good about helping students out on the next exam, and even discounted our midterm marks. Not the best History class I've taken, but the prof wasn't bad nonetheless.

Dr. Price likes to spend the first 45 minutes of every class doing nothing. First we talk about current events. Sometimes they are about Japan but not always. Then we have insipid student presentations. When he finally does get down to lecturing (45mins in) they too are usually incoherent and unstimulating. Easy class but still stay away.

Great Prof, but he will make you work. His tests (or quizes as he calls them) are easy if youv done the reading and/or been to class. Fair and knowledgeable but marks hard on term papers - a stickler for formatting! Area of study is well convered and he is extremely knowledgeable. Usually a presentation and a monsterous termpaper, so watch out.

I swear this guy look like Buddah. Very easy going prof with easy test. I don't know any other history class with multiple choice tests. as long as you take notes on everything (including the presentations) its a really easy class.

Not a bad prof. Doesn't like to lecture for 3 hrs straight, so class is very discussion-based. Awesome upper-level seminar. Good marker, and really wants students to do well. Really likes oral presentations though

Fantastic lectures, but has little to do with class content. Would make a better Culture professor than History professor. Also has a poor scale for grading.
