I don't understand why there's so many negative comments. The class was mostly discussion based and the short story workshops were helpful. The professor is always willing to help if you ask for it. I love that his writing assignments embrace creativity. If you're a serious student, you'll enjoy his class.

One of the only professors I took at sdsu that expected professional work from students. There is no room to slack off, but if you want to be taken seriously and you want to learn how to write, Mel is one of the best.

If you have the opportunity to take Mel's class, do it. His teaching style is slightly unorthodox, but that's what makes him so awesome. This class is not easy, and I would advise anyone who considers themselves to be a "slacker" to avoid it at all costs. However, if you are truly interested in learning how to write fiction, you will love his class

Professor Freilicher is a one of a kind professor. He is a diamond in the rough at sdsu. take his class and engage in a world of literature full of social criticism and sexual innuendo. I promise you will laugh out loud in class, while Freilicher performs and provides a cynical discussion on the world at the readings...enjoy!

This guy could care less about students. He thinks u won't understand the readings. He's a jerk about grading. Doesn't like to give A's. He gives checks as grades on papers [like in elem school]. He is so precise in what he wants. He doesn't care if he embarasses you. He always eats Snicker bars. And always says LOOK! DON'T TAKE HIM :(

The prob isnt that this teacher assigns sex & murder but that he does not analyze them. Needs to provide more than a superfical analysis on power structures especially when assigning books with****and murder of women. A real cop out. Mean to students. the readings are all classic and great readings...however he ALWAYS brings up sex! its an easy class if u just read because the quizzes are basic reading knowledge that are easy points (basically your only grade).However the "papers" u write arent for grades, u just get checks or check minus'. He def has favorites kiss ass!

He's an easy professor...the class is just reading! I don't know why everyone complains about why he chooses topics of sex and murder...it's kind of a big issue today...i mean, get real! favorite english class ever. attendence is a must, easy quizzes every week are helpful cuz because it makes you keep up with the reading. interesting reading, very interesting and fun professor. tells great stories; is very sarcastic, but a very loveable professor. use as many quotes as you can in essays. def recommend to ppl who like english

I took the class because it was the only section open. Seems to be very responsive to students who go to office hours. Read the material. Quiz every class if you take it at night. I thought it wasn't too bad, I should have gotten a C and got a B. Not too bad all in all.

Class one night a week for two hours with this guy is torture. It's a pretty easy class, but he is very oppinionated and will destroy an essay if he doesn't agree with your interpretation. Lots of quizzes, but theyre easy if you read the stories before class. take him if u have to he's not the worst just really boring!

I enjoyed some of the readings he gave us, but yes, he is obsessed with sex. Then again, he's an artisitc guy. He's gonna be moody and negative, it's just his nature. He is also constantly reminding his class of their inferior education. (not our fault he claims.) Do the readings and you'll do fine.
