I am one to be a bit critical of professors. But Dr. Mies is one of the best. If you ever need help, he's the man. He was great as a professor and as an adviser. He went out of his way for both. He brought back my love for Geology. He is highly intelligent but very approachable. He was understanding while I dealt with health issues all semester.

He was very interesting to listen to. I can say that my knowledge in Geology has broadened greatly. His assignments can be difficult though. He is really intelligent and made even the boring topics interesting. He also really takes time to work with you out of class if you need it, which is refreshing. I like his glasses, too!

Comment:

Mies truly loves geology and knows his subject well, but he taught way over my (and most everybody else's) head. His lectures are explained with drawings instead of definitions, and it is much harder than most intro classes. Tests did not quite match with the study guides.

He is awesome, for any class, I have had him for 5 classes from base level geo to hydrology and he rocks. No joke, and he is very smart, but he can actually teach you with his brain instead of ramble a bunch on nonsense you wont understand, when he sees that you dont understand he breaks it down to make sure you can get it down. RECOMMENDED 100%

First actual 'rating' here - but felt obliged after seeing other recent ones. Entirely straightforward with any/all expectations, assignments, tests, etc. Lectures are clear, and interesting. If you need tutoring or extra-credit after learning such basic stuff from a professor like Dr. Mies - you instead need a reality check. Great guy.

Dr. Mies is a pretty good professor. His lectures are kind of boring so it is hard to pay attention but the tests pretty much come from the notes so you need to go to class to pass the class.

This man is the reason I dropped out of Geology! He mumbles during his lectures and gets mad if you leave to go to the bathroom. I asked him for help and he told that the tutoring doesn't help, there is no extra credit, coming to office hours won't help, and you should be making all A's any ways this stuff is easy. Worst teacher ever!!!! DON'T TAKE

He mumbles and it is difficult to understand him. It's quite challenging to write his notes because he jumps around in his lecture. He also draws a lot of pictures instead of writing which can be very confusing especially since his drawings aren't the best. He also tells stories a lot and gets off topic.

He's great! He likes to draw a lot when he teaches so that's something you have to get used to if you aren't already. Teaches the material very clearly. Tests pretty much come straight from the notes. 3 assignments throughout the semester but they were all pretty interesting. I recommend him!

Dr. Mies is an amazing teacher. He enjoys the subject and it shows during class. He provides study guides for the tests, which are mostly multiple choice with an essay, and there is hardly any homework. Go to class and pay attention (which he makes easy to do) and you'll pass, no problem.

Great guy and professor! I never used my book, the tests are just like his lecture. He is very nice and gives stories to help you remember geological terms (Which i was awful at!) I would definately take him again!
