Martire was the most demanding, and difficult professor I ever had. He is also my favorite professor. You have to read, you have to work. He will challenge you to think critically. You will become a better student, thinker, and person because of it. He is a fair grader. B is the norm. You have to work really hard for an A, but also for a C.

Comment:
Martire is a philosophy professor. So very large and sophisticated vocabulary is expected. As long as you have access to a thesaurus, you should do fine. It is a very interesting class. Assignments are demanding, but interesting. As long as you explain yourself completely in your answers, you will do fine. Never been prouder of earning an A.

Dr. Martire is very educated and it clearly shows. I greatly advise NOT TO TAKE HIM FOR A GEN ED COURSE! He speaks in a way that no normal human being can understand, he gets mad when you ask basic questions, and when you e mail him for help he replies in an even more confusing way. His class is graded on 2 essay exams, 1 paper, and a final.

Brilliant speaker. Sure, he has an extensive vocabulary, but he also has a PHD. Rise to his level and you will do well. Listen and participate. I found the class to be enjoyable, and challenging

One of my best professors. I had him for social ethics and existential philosophy and I must say, he is one of the few professors I had that I still talk about to this day, 13 years later. Listen to him, study hard, think harder, he will make you think and that is far better than anything else he could teach you.

He's an extremely knowledgeable professor, and he expects college-level effort. It's sad he's received a bad rap by other gen ed students. He's willing to assist with anything if asked, takes the time to make sure things are clear, and makes the material seem interesting, even when it can be really boring. I highly recommend him!

There is a definite trend in the negative comments. If you don't understand Martire, bring a dictionary. I'm glad he expects his students to know what he's talking about because, at the end of the day, it gives people something to live up to.

Probably the most intelligent dude I've ever met. His classes are very challenging and interesting, but he's a super fair grader. He's also willing to do all he can to help you, as long as you ask for it.

This was an easy class for me...I believe that Martire was excellent at explaining things, and looking at them from a broad perspective. I could tell that he is a very intelligent, thoughtful individual, and that he is quite experienced. He never let the class break down into a debate by championing a particular perspective, which I appreciate.

Professor Martire is an excellent teacher. He is very intelligent and makes the class interesting. Attendance is mandatory, but if you are going to school to actually learn something, that shouldn't be a problem. It is not the easiest class, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would definitely take his classes again.

He's a really great teacher, introductory students are just idiots. If you are the least bit intelligent, you will get a decent grade. Just attend and****tt.

It is a shame that this site mixes the comments of general education students with those pursuing a philosophy degree. To put it simply Martire is extremely intelligent and he knows it. He is a philosophy professor for philosophy students and MSU is lucky to have him.

Dr. Martire took me out of what Kant called a "dogmatic slumber". I feel lucky to have been in some of the discussions both he and I have had, and the discussions in class regarding the nature of philosophy, science, and language.

I took his PHI 115 class honors. He's the kind of guy who takes 2 minutes to explain the most simple of concepts (not becuase he goes in depth but because he is SO wordy). You'll think you're doing terribly the entire semester but most likely end up with an A. You can get B's on every paper and test and still get an A if he thinks you tried.

Do NOT take Martire if possible. Although the class is an introductory course, he treats the class like they are all philosophers and know everything about everything. He is really super smart, but everything goes above everyone's heads. Requires you to write a thesis defense paper and write three essay exams. Too much work for intro class.

Very boring class. Thought it would be more about philosophy and ethics but was more like a political science class. Class always gets out late. Easy A if you just rewrite what's in your notes but sitting through each class was like hell.

He won't treat you like you are in High School. He speaks to his students at a collegiate level, expects that same level of work and participation. He's a brillant man, and engaging professor, and anyone with a desire to understand the world arond them will benefit from taking his class.

One of the worst teachers I have ever had! I hardly ever went to the class because I couldn't understand a word he was saying. Tests were take home essays, and he can be an easy grader on those as long as you follow the guidelines for them, but he gives terrible feedback. I would strongly recommend not taking this teacher!
