Comment:
The content of CMPT 307 requires students to develop strong problem solving abilities over the length of the course which requires you to put in a lot of effort. Joseph Peter's lectures and homework really helped me to develop these skills and succeed in the course. He is a funny and clearly a caring person. I would certainly recommend him.

307 is a tough course and I would recommend taking it with Joseph Peters. The quiz material comes from the textbook and lectures so don't miss any classes, and he is very helpful in office hours which you will need for the assignments. The final is much harder than the quizzes.

He's probably one of the toughest prof in SFU. You may be tricked into believing that he's a lenient grader at the end of the semester, so you give him a good review. Do not believe him. He failed many students in my class because he graded his final exam brutally. If you do bad in the final, he will fail you regardless of your overall performance.

An awesome instructor. Caring, explains concepts clearly, and is very helpful in office hours. One criticism - I feel like I got away with some BS/handwaving. The material is hard, but important to learn, so I definitely cared about understanding more than marks. Beware - the final is harder than the quizzes, and is worth 50%.

Recommended for 307; course is mostly about solving word problems rather than mostly proofs so it's an interesting course in that way. Homework and quizzes can be tough but he is very helpful and friendly in office hours.

I took this class because it was a pre-requisite for Distributed Systems and I wasn't necessarily expecting to be that interesting. However, I very much enjoyed this class. Dr. Peters is a fantastic lecturer, one of the best I've had at SFU, and he was helpful during office hours and after class. I learned a lot from this class.

Dr.Peters does a good job teaching a rather difficult subject. This is perhaps the hardest CMPT course I have taken yet, yet most likely the one I have enjoyed the most so far. He teaches in a way that encourages actual learning and thinking. Coming up with a solution to problems is not easy, as you will find in this course.

He is one of the best professors I had. He rewards people for creative solutions to problems even if they don't work out in the end. He encourages discussion in class which unfortunately not many take advantage of. Exams require creative thinking so if you just want to memorize something, then you should rethink the reason why you are in university

I always seem to be running out of time on quizzes, and half of the course grade are based on those quizzes. His notes are useless, so just study from the textbook. Would not take another class with him again.

Nice guy, but avoid his class, I don't understand how he expects you to finish his 50 minute midterm in time, hard to believe he is a full professor and still doesn't understand this, how many more years until you figure this out Joe, maybe you don't really care although it seems like you do. Proof, some can do, some can teach ...

Marking is based only on many quizzes and final exam. 20 minute quizzes were given about once a week or so. I found these quizzes hard and also he doesn't give us enough time. Class average on these quizzes were low. The instructor does not give out useful notes so be prepared to study from the textbook yourself.

The prof was 100% dedicated to making the learning experience best possible for the students. Even then, the material is difficult and hard to focus at, so either read carefully in advance or prepare to study on your own after the lecture.

Text is excellent. Good lecturer. Lecture notes are so mathematical and not too usefull in prep for exams. Tricky exam questions - was somewhat deceived by easy subject that turned difficult. Project can be difficult - so start early.
