Hands down best class I've ever taken at Binghamton with the best professor. Dr. Shepherd is a wonderful educator and cares immensely about his students. A majority of your grade is based around a journal detailing the 2 week trip to Costa Rica (which was a beyond amazing experience). Take as many Shepherd classes as you can!!!

Shepherd is one of the professors you need to take a class with before you graduate as a BIO major. Sometimes felt out of place in this class because he knew and loved about 10 of the students very well - can be isolating. Was a very interesting class regardless; tests can be tricky but not impossible. Lots of field trips which were fun!

I am 100 percent sure he's a really nice person, but having him teach half of this introductory biology course was a HUGE mistake. He did not arrive prepared with slides and took a great deal of time out of the lecture in order to write down everything he was saying. Would not take any classes by him again, and I'm a Bio major.

He is a pretty decent professor, good lecturer, although he can be boring sometimes (it was a morning class though). However, his exams are not easy, they require a lot of studying. Also, the other assignments required for the class are also intense.

A very nice and helpful professor. The class was OK. The lectures could be boring and the tests were slightly difficult but the subject matter was quite interesting. One good thing was that the final was three weeks before finals so for the last two weeks it was just field trips. If you have any interest in birds, take the class.

Great guy. He knows his stuff, only trouble I had was sifting through what he taught for what we might be tested on. Otherwise, I really enjoyed his class and getting to know him. Wish I could go on the spring Costa Rica trip!

He wasn't helpful at all really. He's got a great sense of humor and he's a nice guy, but he is not a good teacher. He mumbles about unimportant things, then shoves figures from the book into view and just writes 1 word from 20 minutes of talking down. Rely HEAVILY on the book, as his test questions are very specific, but doable if you study hard.

One of the worst professors I've had. His lectures were very slow and boring. Literally half the class stopped showing up after he started teaching the second half of the 118 curriculum. You're better off reading from the textbook.

I took this course hoping that it would reignite my interest in bio,and it was perfect. Dr. Sherpherd cares a lot about his studies and his classes, and he's amazingly accomodating. I literally want to skip my other classes to work on Entomology-he takes a potentially dry subject and makes you want to devour it. I'd recommend this class to anyone.

He likes to draw pictures, write down key words, and verbally explain concepts instead of writing it all down. He tests fairly in that if he focuses on a topic more than others, he will test it a little more also. You need to know the details with him, but he clearly goes over them in class.

the class sucks and the professor as well. he doesn't specify what u need to focus on and his grading is ridicules. i never hated a class in my life as this zoology class. the best part in it is the TA's. the lab is awesome and is taught by two intelligent TA's and they make the course fun. if you take excellent notes take this course or else DON'T

I don't know what those other guys are talking about. Yes, you do need to go to class and take good notes, but I personally didn't need the text. His tests are short answer, and he's a fair grader, but he'll get you on details. He's funny, extremely intelligent, a very good lecturer, and very easy to talk to. He's basically Dumbledore; nuff said.

New course, lectures never prepared before class. Learned absolutely nothing, it was all review from other classes, and grading was unfair. Too much work. Take something else. His Ent. class is just the same.

Agree with 5/20 post. I also missed a discussion section- it was a hike through the nature center, which we had already done once for this class. For that they took 4 points off of my final average, so my 94.6 A went to a 90.6 A- Absolutely unacceptable- went to the department, but doubt they will do anything. Will never take courses w/ him again

Course is new, taught by two profs. I didn't mind being used as a guinea pig until I realized how much work the class was and how outrageous the grading was. I had a 96 at the end, and because I missed a single discussion woth 1 pt they gave me an A-. Emailed them, they "will not discuss grading calculations". Waiting to see if the dept will act.

This man saved me in Molec. bio the 2nd half of the semester. His lectures are not purely power point notes, and he'll draw out diagrams to reinforce what he's talking about. Of course, some students learn differently and you will either like his style or not.

Hands down he is the best proff i've had at bing. At first i didn't think studying bugs would be that cool but it's become my favorite class and i'm seriously considering becoming and entomologist now. if you study for the exams they're not too hard. the lab project at the end of the semester is kind of time consuming but its not terrible.

He is a really nice person if you go to his office hours and he is concerned about his students. However most students will give him bad ratings because of the fact that his notes forces us to read the textbook while other teachers give us in depth notes. He is a good teacher BUT most students aren't concerned with learning rather just taking notes

Pay VERY close attention to what he says, rather than what he writes down. Has no powerpoint slides, and his notes aren't very useful, so it makes it a bit more difficult to study when tests come around. On the other hand, he's one of the most upbeat, helpful and nicest professors I have known in Binghamton.
