Comment:
Van Anglen is one of the best professors I've ever had and probably ever will have. He is very intelligent, but does not flaunt it like other profs at BU. You will learn a lot if you give him the respect of doing the readings (which are enjoyable and not too load heavy.) A must have professor for sure

Van Anglen is the best professor at BU: a little imp giggling forth astronomic amounts of knowledge. He is a scholar and a gentleman, over-qualified to teach these ignoramuses giving him poor reviews. If you want to learn and experience quality education, this is the charmer for you. He loves gin. I wish he was my best friend.

Terrible professor. Can't understand him, can't read his markings on papers. Doesn't want you to write original ideas, would rather you write what his interpretation of a text. Unreasonable professor.

I could not understand him at all. His comments were useless. Class discussions were boring and filled with lots of extemporaneous asides. I do not recommend his class.

Van Anglen is one of the greatest English teachers ever. His handwriting is terrible so you have to go to office hours, but he's usually very helpful. You don't need to do the readings, since they're only for class discussions, but it helps to participate in class. He's also a fairly easy grader. I highly recommend his environment class.

Dunno why I'm so scared of him-but I find him intimidating. One of those "head in the clouds" profs. Also made me cry when my first paper got a C+ and it said 'plagiarism' on it-but after talking to him in OH we cleared it up. The reading is crazy--even he doesn't expect you to do it all. And revisions will get you a better grade. Tough course, eh?

He is one of the cutest old men ever. He is very funny and easygoing; he's approachable and not full of himself like many professors. He can be a tough grader, but each paper has multiple drafts and he is very helpful during office hours; he genuinely wants his students to do well. Class is very open-ended in terms of what you write about on papers

I adore him. I never find lecture boring - his insights are fascinating and his humor is hilarious. I regularly attend office hours when writing my papers, which has proved to be invaluable to my grade. Highly recommended! (Also, he does a pretty good Godfather impression!)

Wonderful, highly intelligent and witty old man. A great sense of self-deprecating humor which is always thrown in at the most unexpected times and livens up a class. Tough grader but fair, and you get several drafts instead of just one chance. And he loves those whales...Herman Melville!

God Bless This Professor. He is SO knowledgeable, classy, humorous, honest, and approachable. He will show you how to close read things by paying attention to tropes and historical/biographical context and will give reasonable and fair criticism on papers. My regret is that I didn't take his class sooner!! Be prepared to take notes quickly :)

The more I talk about Prof. Van Anglen, the more I realize how much I value him. He's brilliant, wonderfully quirky, and truly interested in helping you improve. Take advantage of office hours, participate in class and indulge his tangents. You'll learn a lot painlessly. Easily my favorite professor at BU and a pleasure to have learned from.

Be prepared to have your brains lectured out. His quirkiness (due to a self-professed influence of medications) livens up the lectures, but most of it is dry English stuff. Meeting with him outside of class to discuss papers are a good idea-- he'll practically tell you where to look for information and what to write if you pitch him an idea.

Professor Van Anglen!! I couldn't give two craps about 19c American Lit, but I go to every class. Lots of reading, but his lectures are astonishingly comprehensive. Take good notes! Essays are open topic, and he'll help you if you're stuck. Also, his little jokes are some of the funniest things I've ever heard. Take him if you can!

self-deprecation is always funny, especially from a steriotypical english professor. always late to class, which is nice if youre always late too. if you can write worth a**** you'll do fine. and the re-writes are nice too. tries to make 220 interesting when its really not even meant to be. the man loves whales. and i love him.

he's the stereotypical english professor. some might see him as being dry at times, but i found his class entertaining and interesting. the discussions were really good and he's great at explaining things. he isn't THAT tough of a grader, and on the re-writes if you do what he asks, you get a while letter grade higher.

Very kind, funny, entertaining and helpful professor. However, his grading, as mentioned, is much more stringent. The class was great, but I felt like grades were too picky. I would still recommend him based on his great personality and humor, but don't expect the grade inflation that has been advertised.

Van Anglen, as other people have mentioned, is a hilarious old man who tends to go off on tangents. He is extremely intelligent and his cynicism and sarcasm make me smile. You have to talk in this class to get a decent grade, and while the prompts can be confusing, once you get what he likes in your mind you are set.

Comment:
While sometimes humorous or clever in his lectures, Van Anglen was typically extremely boring and dangerously easy to ignore. I had trouble following his wandering rants even when I was paying rapt attention. I barely passed the tests and only suceeded in getting a B in the course because he allows students to get their papers proofread early.

He is a very nice professor who encourages participation in his class, and doesn't love to hear his own voice like some other professors. Grading seemed a little harder than mentioned earlier, but overall nice interpretations of texts and a healthily self-deprecating sense of humor.
