Easy class overall. Lots of short papers and film reviews that don't seem to serve much purpose but are easy since he doesn't care about depth of content. Lectures are mildly interesting, but he's pretty pro-S. America and anti-Catholic. Don't take notes, just Wiki the IDs and outline the essay the night before the exam and you'll be fine.

Wonderful professor! Lane is an inspiring lecturer with fabulous stories from his many travels to Latin America. Very helpful outside of class as well. Enjoyed the class, but WAY TOO MUCH reading assigned. If you spend time on the study guides the two exams are fine. 2 annoying map exercises, 2 film critiques, 3 papers, and two exams.

Global History focused a lot on Latin America. He's all over the place - don't expect to cover every word on the class agenda. Expect to do some outside reading to cover the exam review sheets. Exam Review Sheets = amazing. Stay neat, try to do the reading (even if just every other line), and do each assignment, even if it seems tedious.

Great lectures but taking notes is pointless, because they have nothing to do with the midterm or final. Do take notes on his comments about the books & films you have to write papers on (1 short paper, 2 longer papers, READ the books). Study guide is useful & all the info is in the 2 source books. Map project is annoying. Slides are pointless.

I took two courses with Professor Lane and found him to be passionate about his work, very balanced in his historical perspective, and incredibly engaging of his students. His field work is interesting and his appreciation for Latin American culture is refreshing on a campus as anglo-centric as William and Mary's.

Way too much reading assigned with 9 fairly short required books and a dozen or so 30-50 page readings via email, it was tough but it was soooo worth it. Lane is a trip. He's hilarious and inspiring. I only wish I had taken this class before. It was one epiphany after another for me. My favorite prof by far.

Lane is hilarious. His lectures are a lot of fun, but when you get around to writing papers or taking tests, you realize that you should have been reading. Still, I got by with a B without doing much outside of showing up to class. He's really passionate about the subject and does an amazing job.

Lane is actually a pretty tough grader, but his class is extremely interesting and he's quite helpful and kind outside of class. However getting him to answer emails is often like pulling teeth.

Knows an incredible amount, and hes funny and wore lederhosen once. Not too much work, but he is a really hard paper grader.Tests cover obscure peices of information not covered in class and barely mentioned in book, but gives you the questions ahead of time, so its not so bad.Map exercise=pain in butt

The B is easy, the A is a stretch. Much of the material for exams comes from readings and is obscure (but gives you a study sheet with all the questions on the exam). Hilarious, passionate, and inspirational. Presents history as a story and makes it interesting. Going to class is worth it. THE BEST.

Best class I have taken at college. B is easy, A is hard. Still, I am pleased with my B+, and Lane is an awesome teacher. I'm taking his 300 level Brazil class next semester.

The class is definitely interesting and Friday slides and movies are a plus. He's not as easy of a grader as the others have said, though, so watch out. Expecting a B isn't out of reach, but an A sure is. He's very hot; brings "herbs" to class.

Great personality, passionate about Andean history. He is funny, and not too tough a grader. Worth going to class. Only downside is that most of the terms on the midterm and final weren't covered in class, and you'd have to look them up on your own.

Didn't really understand the concept of the seminar. Completely ignored 9/11, which seemed kinda short-sighted in a history class. Can bring notes to exams. Tried to assign work by email over fall break.
