Temkin is a top-notch instructor and researcher. That being said, he's got high expectations of himself and of his students. You will have to actually do the readings (50100pgs) and understand them in order to receive an A. Going in to office hours, participating in class, and turning in good homework can all result in a full letter grade boost.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS if you think you have JUST an interest in philosophy. It is extremely long and outlandish material and Larrys expectations make it hard for you to pass unless you know that you will be at every lecture and recitation and you dont have a problem with homework. HOwever hes a magnificent man. So genuine.

Temkin is literally the best professor at Rutgers. I've met with him on several occasions and I am taking an Advanced Ethics Seminar with him. CMSI is NOT easy, maybe too difficult for a 100 level course; but this man is brilliant, and will give you an incredibly strong basis for applied ethics. He's also hilarious, and down to earth. Take CMSI!

Larry is an incredibly long-winded professor, and his lectures tend to be completely packed with material. The class under him was, as described, fairly difficult, but incredibly fair. Larry is one of the very few professors who genuinely cares about his students. He will easily return twice as much effort into teaching as you put into learning.

Temkin is a tough professor. He expects high level performance and clear insight in classwork as well as paper assignments. Although he expects a lot from you, he also gives a lot and will work with you to do your best. Do NOT take this class if you want a fun class. Take it if you're interested AND good at it.

He gives you three examples and curves them to your benefit while also giving you the questions ahead of time for the final. The examples get progressively more difficult but he tells you that. Each absence or late homework over 5 and 1 respectively is half a letter grade off. I received an A+ and was knocked down to an A- but some insta-failed.

Had Temkin for 2 classes. Def my favorite prof. He is a big time philosopher who cares deeply for undergrads- which is why he takes attendance, sets the bar high, etc. More than just teaching he tries to make his students more ethical If you show interest he is very friendly/receptive if you do not, you will pay.Enjoyed each lecture. Inspiring man!

Extremely smart and opinionated. I feel like he was holding back because it's a seminar and he wants the students to talk. Even 3 hours isn't enough time. There's a LOT of reading, but it's mostly worth it. I can proudly say that I sort of understand Kant now =). Grade is ~90% based on your essays about the books read in class.

I took current moral and social issues at rutgers my first semester and really fell in love with this guy. His lectures were interesting and his banter respective to them was clever. He set the bar really high as far as my expectations for the rest of my professors I've had which haven't come close. Larry is a wizard.

I guess it's a good class if you just want to hear this guy arrogantly talk about himself the entire time. If you are not a philosophy major and do not enjoy the subject, do not take this class. I made the mistake of taking it just to fulfill a requirement and barely passed. It is way too hard for a gen ed philosophy requirement.

Def. not a class for those who have absolutely no interest in Philosophy. DO NOT take this class if you expect to be helped out in the least. The way he explains things, you had to have had previous knowledge of the subject. While he could be considered "chill" hes nt good for learning

Larry Temkin is one of the best professors I will ever have at Rutgers. He is so funny and a great teacher and actually cares about his subject! And you will too after you take this class. If you stay on top of the reading and take good notes during class, you should get a high grade. Believe me--you won't regret it, take this class!!! :) A++++++++

TAKE ANY CLASS OR SEMINAR WITH LARRY TEMKIN. He is the greatest and funniest guy AND you will LEARN A LOT from him. If you do the work, take good notes, and think about what you learn from time to time, you will probably get an A. It doesnt even matter tho, this is just one of those classes that you will be happy that you took :) A+ teacher and guy

I took Temkin's classes 25 years ago. The only problem then was he thought age 18-22 y/o students had something essential to contribute and would reserve large blocks of time for class discussion that were a waste of time. I am glad to hear that he apparently has given that up and talks himself non-stop. If any college class is worth the tuition

Larry is one of the more interesting professors at Rutgers and loves to included profanity in his lectures. My TA counted and near the end of the semester he dropped the F-bomb over 100 times! Temkin does make the class enjoyable and while his exams are fair, he does like to overtly promote his liberal bias towards his students.
