Oh, Louis. This man is really, really smart and one of best speakers I have ever witnessed. Genius wit. Arrogant, but in a cute way. He is a lot of people's favorite prof. He's very open and grateful to student comments. Very cool. Interested in pop culture. You can talk to him for hours about Morrissey.

Going to his lectures: interesting, but all in all felt like a waste of time. Really doesn't care about his students. He often mocked or made fun of some. Course material/guidelines were ambiguous and unclear. I was only lucky to get a cool TA

He is definitely an excellent and interesting lecturer. He is very intelligent and well rounded, very funny and witty. I went to every lecture and didn't regret it. He requires extensive reading, and you HAVE to read in order to pass. He has very high expectations regarding writing and improvement. Overall, very interesting, but difficult.

Louis is an engaging lecturer, but not necessarily the best one. The tests really are something else--one question on the final was literally three consecutive words and you had to identify the author who wrote them. Overall, not an awful class, but definitely not a great one.

Had him for LTEL 103K, currently enrolled in LTEL 110I, which promises to be just as incredible. Louis is the best professor I've had at UCSC by FAR. The people who don't like him probably just don't get him. He's brilliant and his lectures are fascinating. Advice: TAKE NOTES ON EVERYTHING. You will be tested on it!

A talented speaker who knows a good book, but the most arrogant instructor I have had at UCSC. His exams are multiple choice questions focused on arbitrary details and 10-15 minutes to analyze expansive concepts like primitivism. His lectures are enjoyable but mostly explore personal interest and arbitrary tangents about less important novels.

Hands down, Louis is the greatest professor I've had at UC Santa Cruz. His excellent orating skills and charming wit make every lecture a pleasure to attend. You'll regret missing any of his epic speeches. Although the class requires heavy reading at a fast pace, take it seriously and you will be blown away by the amount of useful knowledge you'

Probably the hardest class I've taken here...but one of the best. Professor is great speaker, I was unable to NOT pay attention. Assignments were rare, but difficult. Like I said, really hard, but he helps you, and it's and you feel real good you passed.

Professor Chude-Sokei is an amazing professor. I, for one, was glad that he encouraged students to talk and feel that the "name dropping" and "self glorifying literati" are actually positive traits, like the student doesn't just read what is required of them. Chude-sokei's lectures are always engaging and tons of fun. Take his classes!

Wish he would talk more than the self-glorifying literati in class would. Class was too much of pompous students name-dropping and generally being useless, which Chude chose to encourage rather than inhibit. Chude is also quite arrogant (which can be fun sometimes, others annoying) and presents a limited yet interesting view of literature.

Quite possibly the tightest professor at UCSC. Incredible speaker and this dude knows what he is talking about. Louis is a refreshing look at what academia as a whole might some day be. anyone who learns from this man is way lucky. If you take his the material in his classes as seriously as he does, you will become a more powerful thinker.

People adore him because he curses and acts hip during his lectures, but he's AWFUL. He is blatantly arrogant and does not CARE about any of his students. He lets the TAs handle all the work and gets visibly upset when approached with questions and then refers you to a TA. He's impatient, condescending, and RUDE. Gotta be honest: I hate him.

Chude-Sokei was awesome. His class was tough in that the reading had to be done, but he taught his subject extremely well and had an overall great presence in the classroom. He was positive and helpful, and a great teacher. I recommend this class if you're willing to do the reading. Though my neighbor did none of it and pulled off the same grade...

Hilarious, interesting lectures. Keeps whole class involved. You go through about a book a week, but try to keep up. Chose intriguing books I enjoyed but never would have picked up on my own. If you've done the reading prior to the lecture, the lecture will make so much more sense. Look up the terms, they're on the tests. I recommend the class.
