If you look over the readings for like 2-3 hours a week (there can be 5-6 hours of readings assigned so you pick the best ones) and then you actually go to class you'll legit learn things and do fine on the tests... this class falls in the 70ish average so it's not a "Bird class" as some people think and those are the people who end up with C's...

Too much generalized readings and not enough structure in the content expected to be known for tests. Gets off topic often, and lectures too fast without any slideshow so it becomes very difficult to learn much or take proficient notes.

Comment:

This could be one of the worst courses I've ever taken. You don't understand how it all fits together... she goes off on long tangents and often nobody understandsknows what she's talking about. Taking notes is difficult because she doesn't use an overheadslidesprojector. She uses a blackboard and jots down random things.

Comment:

Do not take this class expecting an A without serious effort. Endless homework. Nice lady, very interested in giving advice for post-grad. Definitely knows her stuff. Keeps you on your toes with things like not putting quiz dates on syllabus- skip at your peril! I worked and researched more for her non-essay class than other prof's essay classes.

I had her for Medieval studies, Toswell is a very nice lady but i would not advise taking this class unless you have a good amount of basic knowledge in the field the class or extremely interested in the subject matter. Otherwise you'll find this very challenging and frustrating.

Clearly, CLEARLY knows what she's talking about and is very passionate about it. She is hard but fair in her marking and can explain where she got the grade from. It is possible to get 100% in her class, but you have to really work for it. Very, very helpful both in-class and with any post-PSE plans - genuinely cares about her students.

Took Medieval with her. She's very knowledgeable and due to this, is prone to getting off track. However, very helpful and interested in seeing students succeed. She's funny and enthusiastic, but can be easily get off track. Fair marker, if a bit hard on midterms/exams. Makes up for this with easy participation marks.

Toswell is a great prof. She is tough, but she is great to talk to and hilarious. she helped me outside of class with uni in general not just thing relating to the course. I would often talk to her because I enjoy her company. Favorite prof I've ever had, hope to take a class of hers again! if you don't do the work, you wont get the grades!

Cannot describe how unorganized and unhelpful this prof is. Had her for Old English and struggled mainly because she was not using overheads when taking up translation homework, which is the bulk of the course. After asking her to do so, I lie you not, she said, "I don't believe in overheads". Incredible.

Comment:

I enjoyed her Fantasy Fiction class for the content. She is a decent lecturer but picks favourites. Unfortunately, the TA's in her class were brutal and they mark most of the assignments. I spent a considerable amount of time on one assignment and did worse on it than I did on an assignment I spent an hour on. They will peg you in a certain range.

Tough, but extremely knowledgable and funny. Hard work will be rewarded, but be prepared to work like mad! You can't fake it either: she'll know! An excellent teacher for the fearless, and students who love the subject. No fun for slackers!

I took Fantasy Literature with Professor Toswell and I found her to always be interesting and informed on the texts we read. She was extremely helpful and a fair marker. Her exam was unbelievably long but asked expected questions.
