Prof Asano is very good at teaching advanced level . Many interesting materials and informations. As long as you do the homework, she's not too strict on the details. Quizes are all online, mid-term and final are open-book. Highly recommend for who want to make progress

Asano sensei can be intimidating and strict at the same time, but she cares for her students and wants them to keep on top with their assignments. Although, the class was hard, I learned alot!

She is sometimes just mean, but usually just rude and egotistical. She is a good and funny teacher sometimes, but that doesn't outweigh the extreme mood swings she has other times. Plus, she grades more strictly than any teacher I've ever had, and I am not exaggerating. I highly recommend NOT taking Japanese at SFSU with this teacher.

She's militarist and unsympathetic to things like: health related absences, transfer students who didn't learn the same as everyone else, the difference in level of your classmates, fear of reading the text and/or your personal answers in class, speech impediments (two of my classmates have and she is very impatient with them), Shall I go on?

Is she easy? HECK NO. But neither is learning a new language. Asano-sensei is hands down one of my favorite teachers at state. Although she is strict, she really helps you learn the language and is super passionate about teaching. Take her if you really want to drill Japanese into your head while enjoying class. :)

Asano-sensi is a wonderful teacher and I learned so much from her. She can be strict and intimidating, but only because she really cares about her students. Studying for her tests is mandatory, as is attendance. This class is not a cakewalk. Take her if you're serious about learning Japanese, you won't regret it!

She's an amazing teacher, but gives hard tests. I can see how she'd be great at teaching students who are in their second year of Japanese and beyond, but for first years she expects quite a lot. Be prepared to devote all your time to studying if picking up languages instantly isn't your forte.

Awesome class. She's your lady if you want to learn how to read and write "real" Japanese; you learn how to use genkoyoushi! Studying beforehand is an important part of any class, but especially this one! She often draws things on the board to help demonstrate her meaning; these unforgettable masterpieces help you remember concepts!

Her teaching style is great. I would have to say that she always kept me interested in the class. the exams and such weren't hard, but as with all classes you need to study to do well. the class is not demanding at all, but it does still require some studying

Asano-sensei unfortunately is a horribly cruel and mean teacher. Japanese was my passion, and she killed it. I tried coming to her after class several times and everything would be fine one on one. Then in class she would humiliate me in front of the whole class. It's like everything that made me a good student in American classrooms (speaking up, answering questions, participating, knowing the material) turned me into a hoodlum in Asano's eyes. She gave more respect to the class clowns.

BEST teacher in japanese program, highly recommend. can be a little intimidating at first, but is super fun and enjoyable in the higher division courses. her classes are strictly designed, usually including course readers and workbooks she wrote herself as well as weekly online tests and in class discussions. makes magnificent whiteboard drawings!

Asano-sensei is,in one word,AWESOME! I had her since JAPN102 and even though she can be a bit mean (only if you're late or didn't do homeworks),the class was really fun! Just do your homeworks and understand your grammar and you'll be fine.

Teach is fun, class is fun. Textbooks were easy to use and enjoyable and we got to watch a drama in class every Friday. However, Asano is strict and if you can't express yourself in Japanese, she can get on your case. Midterm/final were easy, but she gives too many questions while limiting your time.

Asano-sensei is a very interesting woman! Her class is not easy, but languages generally aren't-- especially with Japanese where you have to re-learn how to read and write! However, she is very lively and funny, and understanding of students with speaking issues. Tests are tough, and vocab often sneaks up on you, but study hard and you'll get it!

Asano sensei is one of the best teacher I have ever encountered. She's lively, knowledgeable and has a great sense of humor. I'm constantly laughing during her class. She's very respectful to her students. Her style of teaching also ingrains the Japanese language into your memory. I'm looking forward to taking her all three years.

I have Asano for 2 sems(japn 101+102) Frankly speaking, I like her best since i've been in class of all Japn teachers in this department. She may sounds mean at the beginning(even in class), but she is totally cool so dun dare to take her class. You may not get help from her(she usually refers u to TAs), but definitely she gives her best in class!!

If I wanted to join the military I would have instead of coming to state. Little did I know that is the way the Japanese Department runs. Not to mention the TAs do not speak English therefore can't really help you. I do not recommend this class. When you get picked on in class they will stare you down until you get some kind of answer out of you.

Not very helpful, especially outside of the class. Not very useful if you are interested in learning the language rather than just learning how to study for tests.
