By far my favorite professor ever. She's clear, organized, interesting, eloquent, accessable. She remains completely objective in class, and is respectful of all student contributions to discussion. Chooses great readings, and makes coursework manageable. She got me interested in Philosophy.

She is a good professor, and lets you think outside the box. Very enlightning class. But she's also a great human being in general, very helpful and kind. I really liked her!

Comment:
Fairly straightforward lectures and the readings are manageable, but altogether too conservative-leaning. Definitely not a relativist!! Skipped over stronger consequentialist, relativist and self-interest ethical arguments (assigned weaker ones) in favor of dogma, virtue or Kant. Avoided moral skepticism altogether.

Professor Merritt is wonderful, an excellent teacher. I'm not too interested in philosophy but this class brought such depth to everything we discussed. really concise so the work load is no greater than it need be. too bad she's leaving W&M.

A great class. Its a lot of reading, but you really just need to skim them and then take really goods note during class. She is really bright and a great teacher. There's just a midterm and a final (optional paper), but she gives you the topics ahead of time - just prepare and you ll do well.

Ethics is an already interesting topic, but Prof Merritt made it that much better. She picks out good readings and does a great job of keeping the discussion going and on track. Tough grader on exams, but nothing Tiefel-like. Definitely a class I recommend.

I loved this class! It was really interesting every day, because of the material and because of her freaky mannerisms. She is way cool and talks like Debbie Downer in the SNL skit.

Merritt is the best. She leads insightful class discussions and selects fascinating readings. She may not be the most entertaining professor in the philosophy department, but if you take her class you will learn a lot.

She's a relativist! Her classes were a little boring, but I could have forgiven her that if her grading style wasn't so terrible. Not a bad way to fulfill a GER, but beware the tests. Your answer may be "right" but not "as right" as

effective lecturer...or as clear as you can be while trying to guide students through philosophical writings. Some of the readings on medical ethics were excellent, so readings just put you to sleep. Very accessible and helpful outside of class.
